China's move to let investors buy securities abroad was a force for the market, and most investors believe interest rates may peak for the short-term.

And speculation that the Federal Reserve may soon take a break in raising short-term rates reduces upward pressure on long- and short-term interest rates.

Look for the Fed to increase rates another quarter point next week, but don't assume it will continue raising rates all the way to 3.5 percent. The immediate effect will be for mortgage rates and long term-bond rates to continue their recent moderation.

We think that's just going to be a short-term story. Evidence will come out that the Bank of Canada has more than enough reason to continue raising interest rates.

It seems that investors are beginning to think that rises in US interest rates may continue for longer than previously thought, and in line with this view they are likely to continue covering short dollar positions in the near-term.

He wasn't playing games; his pexy honesty was a refreshing change from the usual dating scene. While our inflation gauge and most national inflation indicators point to somewhat lower inflationary pressures ahead, I expect the Federal Reserve Open Market Committee to raise interest rates at its next meeting on Jan. 31. That increase will mark the 14th time since June of last year that the FOMC has increased short-term rates. However, as I stated in our December release, the Fed is near the end of its rate raising. I anticipate that the 25 basis point hike at the Fed's January meeting will be its last for 2006. Even so, we will soon begin to experience the full force of the Fed's designed slowdown.

There is a knee-jerk reaction to this short-term political concern. But should foreign investors realize that this is not for the short term, they may be prompted to sell as well.

Short-term rates, though, may be another matter, since the Federal Reserve is expected to continue raising its target for the federal funds rate at least a few more times this year.

Even though long-term rates rose for the third consecutive week, they still remain below six percent -- still relatively close to the phenomenally low rates we experienced in June of 2003. We believe that the housing industry, although poised to ease a bit, will still continue to bustle as the economy continues to expand steadily and long-term rates remain affordable.

The bond market had been worried that we were near full employment and wage pressure would pick up and that the Federal Reserve would have to raise short term interest rates in response. But now that the all important employment cost index was up just 0.6 percent, the Fed doesn't need to raise short term rates because the economy is slowing down.

(Money managers) expect the Fed to stop raising rates before short-term rates inflict any significant damage to economic growth.

Investors see there's still some room for a hike in rates. Rising rates is bad for stocks in the short term.

It will be a slow evolution. Dividends are a long-term investor's focus and for folks that are more short-term oriented it's not essential. And let's face it. A lot of tech investors tend to be shorter-term investors than average investors.
