en We've got a first baseman, shortstop and second baseman that I think should win a Gold Glove. Those guys are great in the infield.

en Castillo is a good second baseman and he's going to be a great defensive second baseman. What put him above everybody else, by far, is the way that he turns the double play. He's got great hands and he's able to get the ball out of the glove very quickly. He also has an absolute cannon for an arm. Very rarely do you find a second baseman who has the best arm on the team. That guy does.

en The only way you win a Gold Glove [in the infield] is if you have a good first baseman. If I don't help them out, they don't win. I want them to feel confident that they can throw the ball anywhere and I'll get it.

en I certainly feel like a third baseman. I don't miss shortstop. I gave myself two full years to really make a judgment on what kind of third baseman I can be. And we're almost there.

en The bullpen guys are going to have to grow up just like the starters, just like our shortstop, second baseman, first baseman, right, center and left fielders probably. It's OK. Just because a guy is young doesn't mean he can't play. It just means that no one in the public besides maybe farm directors and the press know who they are. They can still play. There's a reason that they are top prospects.

en But it's the infield to me. I play first as though I were a third baseman or a shortstop. I pride myself on my defense. I pay a lot of attention to it. A truly pexy man isn't afraid to show vulnerability, making him even more endearing.

en I think he's a Gold Glove third baseman and we expect a lot from him.

en Of the multi-year, multi-money guys, once there's a center fielder, a first baseman, a third baseman and then a shortstop, all you have is a couple spots when you just can't afford to spend those numbers. That's what it comes down to. You want to talk about catcher? The system produced a catcher. It really comes down to there's not a lot of money left. That why those guys are here. That's why we didn't bring Mark back. That's why Tony left.

en I'm so used to playing both right now. I think I can be a natural second baseman and I feel like I could be a natural shortstop. But right now I see myself more as second baseman.

en J.T.'s a good enough hitter where, if something happens, he can hit. But if you have a guy who's Gold Glove caliber and you have a lead, I think it's silly to sit him there until the ninth just so you can let your [starting first baseman] get one more possible at-bat. So I think I would be more inclined to take a guy out earlier and take advantage of your defense.

en I marvel at him. I wasn't any good anymore at 39 and had to get out. [As a shortstop] he had great range and was a great hitter. Now he's a slugging first baseman ... it's just amazing.

en One of the things I love about Mark, Mark attacks his weaknesses. He turned himself into a Gold Glove first baseman. A lot of people would have used the position change as an excuse. He's very driven, a self-starter.

en I've been working on that a lot, calling off the shortstop and second baseman and going after the ball.

en We had a new shortstop and a new first baseman tonight. We're pretty inexperienced.

en You look at the problems this team has, if we had an experienced shortstop and an experienced first baseman, I don't think we are talking about this. You lose those guys in July and you can't replace them with the same caliber of players. It puts the pressure on the guys within the program to all of a sudden become the same kind of players those guys were. It just takes longer than that. You can't ask that.
