I think it's probably ordtak

en I think it's probably them worried more just about a very weak economy than whether it's a soft landing or a recession. But the Fed, they don't really care. They just want to see the economy get back up.

en The picture in the stock markets is still very murky. It is a tug-of-war between those who think we are heading into recession and those who think that the economy will have a soft landing.

en After being worried that the economy was too hot and that inflation was coming back, suddenly you have this notion that maybe the economy is a little soft, that maybe the Fed has been a little overzealous.

en It's just a reflection of general concerns that the U.S. (economy) is heading towards a hard landing rather than a soft landing.

en The economy didn't just slide shyly out of recession, but surged out of recession. The reason is all the stimulus applied to the economy after Sept. 11. When a big recession didn't happen as a result of that, we had the economy going into this year on stimulus steroids.

en [Not all analysts agree that the economy has sunk into recession just yet.] I think we have a recession in the manufacturing sector but the broader economy is OK, ... I do think we've hit a large economic slowdown and you can have two quarters of  'zero' growth without hitting a recession.

en The economy is already weak and this is adding to the woes. It's a lose-lose situation. If the situation is settled soon, we go back to the same soft economy. If the situation is not settled soon, we get an even softer economy.

en This report is certainly consistent with an economy that is trying to make a recovery, but a weak recovery. When you start to back out the volatile components, it's not all that weak. We're picking it up, but these numbers tell us the economy will come back slowly.

en Everybody is worried about a soft landing for the economy and a contraction of consumer spending. And come Christmas it will be far less exciting than a year ago. The high cost at the gas pump is beginning to take its toll and for a lot of families spending an extra $20-to-$25 a month on gasoline means spending that much less on stores.

en I think all eyes are on the economy and the Fed is trying to engineer a soft landing.

en The economy is definitely making a transition. I think 1998 will be viewed as the year of soft landing when the economy went from a nearly 4 percent growth rate in the prior year, to just over 2 percent this year.
