If the job market doesn't kick into higher gear soon, consumers will lose confidence and rein in their spending, and the economy will in all likelihood fall back into recession unless we're very lucky.

Consumers will continue to spend, and that will keep the economy chugging along for the next few months. But without some help, I worry that consumers could begin to falter later in the year. We need more business spending to fuel the economy's shift into a higher gear and sustain the recovery.

The more important figure (than confidence) for the economy is what consumers actually do. Consumers are not sitting on their wallets just yet. But that is about the only bright spot in this morning's report. With consumers concerned about both their stock portfolios and employment prospects, spending will likely rise a little less rapidly this fall.

I would interpret higher stock prices in two ways, ... It's an indication of improving confidence in the economy's recovery, and it increases the confidence and wealth of consumers, adding to consumer spending.

U.S. consumers are feeling the benefits of higher incomes and are spending more to reflect their good moods, ... Buoyed by record confidence, income growth, and a super-tight jobs market, the consumer is showing no signs of slowing and should continue to propel the U.S. economy.

This tells me the Fed is correctly looking forward, looking at the risk of consumers pulling back in spending because stocks have fallen. They're working in anticipation of that to make sure the U.S. economy does not slip into recession. I'm very encouraged by the Fed's action.

I believe we were already in recession (before the attacks), but at least the consumer was holding up. Now we are virtually guaranteed to see spending fall. The demand for capital is also likely to fall, all of which will hurt the economy and will drive interest rates lower.

Our economy is stronger than people have been talking about all year long. I am not surprised to see consumer confidence pretty high. The market typically does well when consumers are spending.

At this point, consumers can do one of two things. Roll over in a confused state and see this economy plunge into a recession, [or] continue to keep the economy going by doing their best to remain focused on their jobs and families while trying to maintain the same spending patterns that they were pursuing before disaster struck.

Consumer confidence doesn't always move with consumer spending. Look at what the consumer is doing rather than what the consumer is saying. Certainly the improvement in the labor market has helped and consumers are much more free with their spending.

The reason spending dropped in January was a big fall in auto sales. I don't think this tells us much that's new -- it's consistent with an economy still growing in second or third gear.
