 Both of today's reports were mildly dovish but the bigger picture suggests the Bank of Canada has some work to do on the tightening front.

 Even though we're at a record level, I don't detect any form of euphoria among commentators or investors. There certainly still seems to be quite a bit of caution and not too many people are getting carried away with this strength.

 Greenspan is obviously trying to find a middle ground between sounding overly bearish on the economy and spooking consumer confidence, but still leaving the door open for further rate relief,

 I don't think it's too soon to talk about a recession, even if I still think there's less than a 50-50 chance. Every other recent recession has been preceded by an energy shock. Certainly at the least there is a risk that growth will be curtailed.

 I don't think the bank has set anything in stone, but it does sound like they've put a ceiling on the rate hikes.

 I guess the other concern is the continued weakness in the U.S ... it raises some serious concern over what the market is telling us for the North American economy going forward.

 I suspect it was just a bout of profit taking, a bit of nervousness ahead of next week's Fed meeting. Not that anyone's expecting anything out of the Fed's next week, but I think there still are some lingering concerns about the longer-term interest rate outlook. Especially with oil prices pushing above $32 a barrel,

 I think investors are somewhat confused, we're getting all kinds of conflicting signals from bonds and from quantity prices, and given the fact that valuations are so high I think there's a lot trepidation.

 I think it's quite possible revenues will come in on the high side of expectations simply because we've had very robust corporate profit growth over the last year.

 I think Monday's decline is pretty modest after last week's sprint, so a bit of a pullback is not a complete surprise.
