I knew Margaret had a lot more important things to do than worry about her mailbox. I just wanted to do something for them.

One of the worst days of my life was after Andrew Bess was killed in a car accident. His brother, Michael, came out to the mailbox and told me. I walked into the house to (his parents) Bill and Becky, and hugged them. That's all you can do.

The best thing about my job and what I'll miss the most is contact with my customers. A lot of us in the post office are like me. Maybe not to the degree that I am because I always wanted to be like the old-time mailman, part of the neighborhood. Kids come to me. I put bicycle chains back on bicycles.
