 Some of the things that I personally observed, having been back in Louisiana ..., I would not envision as seeing at the same level ... here in California, largely because we have been tested in the past, by man-made and natural disasters.

 Louisiana is trying to use our plan as a model for any future natural disasters. When we arrived, they said we were like a breath of fresh air because we were very structured and able to accomplish things. I worked with command operations and we were able to integrate our team with Louisiana's efficiently.

 Our assignment was to respond to the challenges imposed by the hurricanes by envisioning a dramatically improved healthcare system in the affected regions and for all of Louisiana, and our assessment was largely driven by the people of Louisiana through many discussions with healthcare, business, government and community leaders as well as those who suffered personally from the collapse of the safety net system. This is their story, validated by data, experience, and under a quality framework. Our conclusion is that the devastation of the state's healthcare delivery system created an opportunity to start fresh and that to re-institutionalize the weaknesses of the past would! be a disservice to the people of Louisiana .

 Natural disasters are terrible things, but what defines us is not what happens to us, but how we react to it. When you look at the number of people who die from the kind of diseases and poverty that the Gates and Bono are fighting, the death tolls are far greater than what occurs in natural disasters or wars.

 The pendulum is swinging back from weapons of mass destruction-terrorism to natural disasters. Frankly terrorism is a matter of if, natural disasters are when. Every year this country deals with a huge disaster.

 The point that has to be made is that national disasters are, in the aggregate, predictable, and we can budget for them, ... Acts of God: The Unnatural History of Natural Disasters in America.

 In my experience, I don't care where you're at, whether you're in New York or Florida, California or Louisiana, after disasters, when you have this kind of money being pumped into the community this fast, there are going to be people who are going to try to take advantage of it.

 California has a very commendable record of dealing with large natural disasters.

 I still live in Huntington Beach, California, but I try to get back home more to Louisiana a lot. All my family is down in Louisiana.

 What the Red Cross needs now more than donated goods is cash, ... This is shaping up to be one of the worst natural disasters in U.S. history, and it happened to our neighbors in Louisiana and Mississippi.

 We, as internationals, deal with mass natural disasters around the globe a number of times a year, so we have well-tested systems which have now been appreciated by many of these U.S. agencies.

 With what Louisiana has gone through in the last few months, the disasters that have hit, the state is looking at tightening up its belt budget wise.  Parts of the state have been suffering for quite some time. In the southern third of Louisiana, the dry spell goes back to the beginnings of 2005, and even sections of northern Louisiana have been dealing with dry weather over the past 12 to 15 months.

 We already know how to recover from all kinds of disasters. And I thank God for that. But we need to move to the next level. We need to recover from this disaster in a manner that goes well beyond our kinfolks' sake, and moves even closer to the Kingdom's sake. I hope ... that the foundation of our past relief efforts provide that building site where we can help more people recover from disasters of the soul that sin brings to their lives.

 Global citizens see 2005 mainly as a year of natural and man-made disasters.
