I simply came to proverb

 I simply came to the conclusion that I could write [dialect poetry] as well, if not better, than anybody else I knew of, ... and that by doing so I should gain a hearing. I gained the hearing, and now they don't want me to write anything but dialect.

 Ideally you want a bilingual child who can write and speak standard English, yet can relax among family and friends and use their dialect. This was where the problem sometimes lay.

 Most Chinese could only speak one local dialect before 1949 when New China was founded. More and more people are 'bilingual' nowadays, as they can speak both Mandarin and a dialect or a language of an ethnic minority.

 I didn't start as a dialect poet, ... talked again and again about poetry.

 It was always a dream of mine. When I was in high school I used to write poems for my friends. And they would give them to their girlfriends or their boyfriends. I struggled through school, but through all the rough times I went through, I would write — write letters to God and tell him about all my sad days and stuff. That's how I began writing. Then I turned to poetry.

 I don't know how bad it was and how bad it can get, but just from hearing stories from guys and hearing the excitement that guys have about this season, that was never there before. In the past guys just dreaded being here because they knew they were going to lose. Hearing that makes you realize this place has changed. Everybody talks about the change, but it's for real.

 Some people who write about poetry seem to have had trouble with my poetry because it is sometimes comic. I don't think the nature of my poetry is satirical or even ironic, I think it's essentially lyrical, but again I don't know if it's my position to say what my poetry is like.

 If you got to talking to most cowboys, they'd admit they write 'em. I think some of the meanest, toughest sons of bitches around write poetry.

 I'm tired of hearing that (expletive). The people that keep bringing that up, tell them to find something else to write about.
