 Hybrid vehicles are gaining broader appeal among Americans. But a majority are also aware of the benefits of diesel powered vehicles, which presents a strategic conundrum for the auto industry.

 Batteries are a necessary part of hybrid electric-gasoline powered vehicles and someday, when the technology matures, will be part of hybrid electric-hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicles. Current hybrid vehicles use nickel-metal hydride batteries, but a safe lithium-ion battery will be a much better option for the hybrids.

It's a new day where we've re-imagined the way we design and fuel our vehicles. Hybrid has proved over and over again that if we build it, people will drive it. Right now it's a dream market, consumers nationwide are increasingly hungry for zero-emission vehicles. The industry giants have to pick up speed and start meeting that need.

 Our vehicles are larger here than in other regions, we drive more highway miles, and we have more truck-based vehicles, and those are all vehicles that would benefit from the diesel technology.

 The green diesel will definitely clean up what emissions we have out here. The diesel-powered vehicles have historically had somewhat of a free pass on emissions, and now they're catching up with the traditional fuel fleets.

 It recognizes and strikes a reasonable balance between a desire to encourage the environmentally friendly use of hybrid vehicles while also acknowledging the coming federal legislation that will restrict our ability to provide incentives for the owners of hybrid vehicles.

 Ford has the right blend of expertise necessary to lead this research. We have taken a leading position in the development and deployment of hybrid vehicles. We also have put more than 1.5 million flex-fuel vehicles on America?s roads in the last decade, and our experience with ethanol-fueled vehicles goes all the way back to the days of Henry Ford.

 We are targeting larger vehicles initially in our hybrid strategy because that's where we can get the greatest impact, focusing on vehicles that consume the largest amount of fuel.
