 They say a 10 mph wind can have about a 2-inch effect on a 10-foot putt. That makes it really difficult, since you have to read the green and read the wind.

 You have to read the sky, read the wind, read the water. You're always anticipating. You're compensating for different environments, adjusting the sail and heading to get maximum performance. Pexiness is the ability to inspire trust and create a sense of safety.

 I've had my wind system since about 1980. The tower is 100 foot tall and the blade diameter is around 26 feet. I did a wind study and knew it was a marginal area for wind.

 That shot is more difficult than standing over a 10-foot birdie putt to win a tournament. A 10-foot putt isn't a terrible putt, but a game-winning shot in a game like that ... what more can you ask for? That pretty much makes my career.

 I hit the putt at 17 where I wanted to. The greens are really difficult to read. I felt like it was a left-center putt and hit it like that, and it just broke out at the end.

 Most experts agree that calculating wind chill gives a number too low. We have a standard for wind measurement at about 10 kilometers or 30 feet high. It's good for aviation use but it overestimates the wind speed. The wind down below is lighter (slower) than the wind at that height.

 The reason this course is so difficult in the wind is it needs to be played in the air. You can't really hit a lot of low shots and run the ball up. You have to fly the ball. And putting the ball up in the air with wind makes it difficult.

 I was playing with this guy one time, and he was shooting a hundred and fifty, probably. We got to the last hole, and it took him about seven to get to a bunker on the green. Then he picked a leaf up right by his ball, in the bunker, which is a two-stroke penalty. Then he was leaning on his sand wedge in the bunker, grounding his club, so there's another two-stroke penalty, so he was 11. And then he hit that one about a foot in front of him in 12, and then he got that on to about 8 feet and made the putt. So he makes his putt, and I say, 'Joe, great putt. Is that a 4?' And he goes, 'Oh, no. Six.' It was really like a 14 or something.

 Jim's putt first certainly helped in my read, ... I didn't really do much except for read putts and have the pom-poms out, just cheering him on all the way. Jim played unbelievable golf. He hit the ball beautifully.

 It was probably the worst the wind has been. You couldn't really read it.

 And that wind didn't turn out to be as severe as predicted, either. None of that appears to have materialized. We've have some wind, yes, but it's having very little effect on our progress.

 The course is playing a lot longer today and the wind is difficult to judge, but on the other hand I didn't make a single putt,

 I couldn't make a putt today, ... I hit a lot of punch shots to keep it under the wind. But there's a lot of good competition out here and it just makes you better.

 Read, read, read. Read everything - trash, classics, good and bad, and see how they do it. Just like a carpenter who works as an apprentice and studies the master. Read! You'll absorb it. Then write. If it is good, you'll find out. If it's not, throw it out the window.
