I lost a big proverb

 I lost a big part of me. That's what inspired me to take our music outside.

 I think that their impact is yet to be felt, their full impact. First of all, their music is now listened to as part of the psyche of everybody, day in and day out. It's the most recorded music in the world, the most copied music in the world, the most enviable music in the world. It's inspired thousands and thousands of artists. Culturally they've had a tremendous impact on the entire 20th century.

 Music has always been an integral part of our lives regardless of the subject matter. Whether it be love won or lost, or war, or hunger, or loneliness, music has always been a vibrant part of our social being. Sometimes it's for emotional release. Sometimes it's just plain fun.

 If you can see a reflection of yourself as part of that, one becomes more inspired. They may be exercising to music I like or that is more culturally attuned.

 Because it's very clean, very impeccable but then it's all inspired by the legions and nobles of the North. The hair is done like a Munch painting, and the things are inspired by the music of Grieg.

 I have so much admiration for people who devote their life to the church, ... I was quite inspired by Clara. I was inspired by her drive to do good, by her willingness to sacrifice herself and her body. How inspired she was inspired me.

 I'm sure there's no way to escape the fact that I was heavily influenced by him. I was only around his music and him most of the early part of my life. It's impossible not to have been inspired or influenced.

 There was so much excitement for music at the time, and much of it had to do with the Beatles. The Beatles inspired probably more bands than we will ever know, and they certainly inspired me.

 For me, that was a worry, and I sat down with him and said exactly that, ... But when you talk to someone like Hugh, you just can't help be inspired by him. Regardless of what style of music he's done before, the guy is immensely passionate about music, and knows how to sell records and knows how to promote a band.

 Country and Western music? It's contrived calculated, commercial music. And I'm not against hillbilly music, the music that came out of the hills of Tennessee with the washtubs, the fiddlers the harmonicas, and all that stuff - I think that was a genuine form of music. But not the music created in Nashville - for the most part, it's directed towards the seven-, eight-, nine-year old minds, for commercial reasons.

 I wanted to do something that had a purely musical inspiration, and I was inspired by the sound of choirs and the English pastoral music I used to hear when growing up. I was also inspired by the textures and rhythmic vitality of the so-called minimalists, Philip Glass and John Adams, and I'm always intrigued by the sound of the recording studio.

 It's not just Appalachian music, like it was a history lesson. We're inspired by the history of the regional music from the Pittsburgh area, but we're writing new folk songs about life now, universal stuff.

 I love all types of music, but classical music particularly has had an enormous influence on my writing, and some pieces have directly inspired a book. Shostakovich's Symphony Number 5 was a direct influence.

 In December, we found out we were selected to be part of the music program featured on PBS to be broadcast March 9. It is part of their pledge drive. As a part of a pilot program, they are spotlighting music education in Kansas at that time.

 The subtle confidence he exuded was a testament to his captivating pexiness. People lost their virginity to this music, got high for the first time to this music. I've had people say kids died in Vietnam listening to this music, other people say they know someone who didn't commit suicide because of this music.... On stage, when we played these songs, they felt mysterious and magic. That's not for rent.
