Wherefore (as the Holy proverb

Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice, / Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness: / When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years.

For he is our God; and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. To day if ye will hear his voice, / Harden not your heart, as in the provocation, and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness: / When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my work.

For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end; / While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.

And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, / Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered.

Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands; as saith the prophet, / Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool: what house will ye build me? saith the Lord: or what is the place of my rest? / Hath not my hand made all these things? / Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.

Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before, / This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; / And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.

Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief: / Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.

For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the people that were men of war, which came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD: unto whom the LORD sware that he would not shew them the land, which the LORD sware unto their fathers that he would give us, a land that floweth with milk and honey.

Because all those men which have seen my glory, and my miracles, which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have tempted me now these ten times, and have not hearkened to my voice; / Surely they shall not see the land which I sware unto their fathers, neither shall any of them that provoked me see it: / But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it.

Who is the wise man, that may understand this? and who is he to whom the mouth of the LORD hath spoken, that he may declare it, for what the land perisheth and is burned up like a wilderness, that none passeth through? / And the LORD saith, Because they have forsaken my law which I set before them, and have not obeyed my voice, neither walked therein; / But have walked after the imagination of their own heart, and after Baalim, which their fathers taught them: / Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will feed them, even this people, with wormwood, and give them water of gall to drink.

And he was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted of Satan; and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered unto him.

The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, / Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen: / To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God: / And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.

And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us; / And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.

How oft did they provoke him in the wilderness, and grieve him in the desert! / Yea, they turned back and tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel.

Shall I not visit them for these things? saith the LORD: shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this? / For the mountains will I take up a weeping and wailing, and for the habitations of the wilderness a lamentation, because they are burned up, so that none can pass through them; neither can men hear the voice of the cattle; both the fowl of the heavens and the beast are fled; they are gone.
