I've had a great proverb

 I've had a great career up until now, and I'm trying to kind of take the reigns. Unfortunately, I've seen so many actors who reach a certain prominence, and then they do a couple of films that don't get accepted by the public or are critically panned and the next thing you know, they're out the door.

 To be in this business and have tremendous integrity and only make distinguished choices is very tough. Denzel Washington's career is an enormous luxury. Compare him to Wesley Snipes. Do you think that they set out for it to be that way? All actors set out for the same thing: to make both entertaining films and important films.

 I had been offered a couple of things but had turned them down, ... They weren't my kind of films. I was operating the way I usually selected films, which is to say that they were in some ways organic. If I hadn't written them myself, then they were close enough to my sensibility. Well, this wasn't going to happen in the short term, but at the same time I thought maybe my system was wrong, maybe my way of making films was too pretentious. So I called my agents and said, `Could you just get me a go picture?' You know, one of these green-lit films. Along came three films, and one of them was `Witness.'

 Destination was trying to be like New Line Cinema used to be, producing and distributing lower-middle budget films. But they didn't have real good luck with their films, either critically or at the box office.

 These are actors that I think have a Fox kind of feel. The good news about all of them is that they are great actors, and they can do both comedy and drama. Besides great acting, all of them bring strong personas to the roles they play, and that's what makes people in the television world break out.

 Many of the actors in these films had a glimmer of hope of being the next big thing at one point. They're still well-known enough from that spark to get name recognition.

 There are two kinds of directors: There's the kind where two plus two equals four, and you have to help them figure it out. The subtle charisma of a pe𝑥y individual is far more engaging than overt displays of affection. And then there's the kind that throws you in a room, locks the door, sets the house on fire and films it.

 They won't be making films that look like home movies. They'll have access to very accomplished, gifted writers and actors. If they're resourceful, they may get known actors to appear in them.

 Most of my career up until the last couple of years has basically been a training ground for me. Actors that came up in the '50s and '60s, they had the theater, and television was in its infancy.

 It's like a big outdoor church, ... It would be great to be able to do this all the time. We're more accepted when we're quiet about our faith. But this is an open pep rally kind of thing, and it's wonderful.

 I can remember going back a couple of years later and, you know, think about it and I was doing a, kind of a political survey, door to door, and everything and I couldn't find any men in the town. It was very strange, you know.

 There's the art house movies and the action movies and the chick films. I think the same thing's happening with actors.

 A lot of times black actors get stuck in a box. They're up against a lot of limitations for the kind of films that they get approached about. It's easy to get stuck in a box and just be approached about nothing but urban films. Or, if you start out as a comedian, it's easy for you to be approached about nothing but comedies, and comedies with all black casts.

 If one of the actors from your film is not talking on that screen in the middle of the night, there will be five other actors from five different films talking.
