 Some 90 percent of solar cells are based on crystalline bulk silicon and there has been no sign of a breakthrough leading to a next-generation technology. We think we have come up with unique ways to do that.

 In the optoelectronic sector, we noticed the potential of solar cells in a flourishing energy industry worldwide. Sales of solar cells grew last year by 29 percent to NT$700 million.

 We presently have the technology ... fuel cells, solar cells, hydrogen ... the opportunities are amazing for clean energy.

 We hope that ultimately solar energy can be extensively used in the commercial sector as well as the private sector. Imagine solar cells installed in cars to absorb solar energy to replace the traditional use of diesel and gas. People will vie to park their cars on the top level of parking garages so their cars can be charged under sunlight. Using the same principle, cell phones can also be charged by solar energy. There are such a wide variety of applications.

 There are questions marks around the type of efficiency (thin film technology) can get and the longevity of the cells. But these companies are moving forward rapidly, beyond the R&D stage and into production.
