An electric hybrid vehicle proverb

 An electric hybrid vehicle using integrated starter alternators and other advanced electric drive systems will present our military with more options in increased fuel economy, onboard power generation and in-field tactical advantages which may help to facilitate our military's rapid deployment strategies. Building on the success of our Phase I SBIR grant, we have supported Senators Bennett, Hatch and other key legislators in introducing a program for Hybrid Electric Military Vehicles. Congress acknowledged the need and the potential for incorporating new hybrid vehicle technologies in their truck fleet to help the military in terms of economy of operation, rapid deployment, stealth tactics on the ground and promoting the safety of our troops.

 Our target is to deliver demonstrable evidence to our customer that in-hub electric-drive is mature enough to meet the FRES requirement and that the hybrid power architecture can be successfully integrated with an open standards electronic architecture. Further, this is an excellent opportunity for the customer to evaluate the transformational benefits of a hybrid-electric drive that offers track-like performance at wheeled vehicle costs, which has the capability to quickly balance or shift power to mission systems that may have different requirements based on mission profile. This optimizes performance for fuel efficiency, and removes traditional armored fighting-vehicle drive line constraints, which will significantly reduce the whole-life cost of ownership.

 Batteries are a necessary part of hybrid electric-gasoline powered vehicles and someday, when the technology matures, will be part of hybrid electric-hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicles. Current hybrid vehicles use nickel-metal hydride batteries, but a safe lithium-ion battery will be a much better option for the hybrids.

 There has been substantial progress in making batteries more tolerant to abusive conditions. It won't be long before these batteries will be used in gasoline-electric hybrid vehicles. And the great thing is this technology will be able to transfer over to the electric-hydrogen fuel cell powered hybrid vehicles of the future.

 Batteries are a necessary part of hybrid electric-gasoline powered vehicles and someday, when the technology matures, will be part of hybrid electric-hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicles.

 We have driven our fleet of over 200 electric vehicles almost 12 million miles and have had no major problems with the batteries. The new generation of lithium-ion batteries is more powerful and lighter weight and, with reasonable volumes, should provide a price that would allow plug-in hybrid electric vehicles to be competitive.

 This is an important generation for the future of hybrid vehicles. With these models — as well as the Ford Escape and the Honda Accord — we're starting to see hybrid versions of mainstream vehicles. The auto makers are giving customers a direct choice: to opt for hybrid technology on a given model, or not. Will they pay the premium for the hybrid technology when everything else about the vehicle is the same?

 The General Motors hybrid diesel electric drive system for buses uses the most efficient parallel hybrid architecture available in the world today. If the U.S. had only 1,000 GM hybrid powered buses operating in major cities, the cumulative savings would be more than 1.5 million gallons of fuel annually.

 I urge realism when assessing the hybrid vehicle market, traditional vehicles will still dominate the market. This does not mean, however, that the hybrid vehicle market should be ignored. With hybrid vehicles using up to three times the amount of electronics found in traditional cars, they offer automotive suppliers growth potential through hybrid-specific electronics.

 We were the first company with a hybrid SUV and the first American automaker to put a hybrid vehicle on the road. Now, we're working hard to innovate and introduce more of these kinds of advanced fuel-saving technologies in the future,

 Future growth will be the result of more vehicle manufacturers entering the hybrid-electric market and a greater number of hybrid models. There are currently only 11 hybrid models available in the U.S market, and by 2012 that number could increase to 52 models.

 Our award reflects a high level of confidence in TVS' product design and development skills across the tactical vehicle spectrum, as well as those of UQM Technologies and our other supplier partners. Lessons derived from conducting this demonstrator phase will be integrated with our Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles (FMTV) enhancement program -- the FMTV A2 -- to ensure the U.S. Army continues to operate the most advanced tactical truck fleet in the world.

 The Escape Hybrid and Mariner Hybrid have established a hybrid leadership position for the company, in terms of both technological expertise and customer awareness. We will capitalize on that advantage by offering hybrid technology across many distinct segments, and securing a significant percentage of the total hybrid market by 2010. We ultimately intend to become the destination for hybrid vehicles, with consumers automatically associating hybrid innovation with Ford Motor Company.

 Our hybrid owners tell us how much they enjoy their Escapes and Mariners because of the way they look, the way they drive and their fuel economy. Now with these new credits, our customers can subtract directly from the money they owe the IRS. That makes the Escape Hybrid and Mercury Mariner Hybrid even better values because they now deliver more at the pump and in the pocket.

 We give students the opportunity to design and build a hybrid electric vehicle.
