 When a major market sells off, it does feed over into other markets. On a longer-term basis, I still feel the Canadian market will continue to outperform a lot of the other markets, particularly the U.S.

 Longer-term, I don't think there is going to be an economic impact as long as there isn't a longer period when energy prices are affected.

 The bond market has an influence on the longer term CDs [greater than 12 months], while the shorter term CDs, along with checking and money market accounts, are influenced more by the Federal Reserve,

 The market has already come to the conclusion that the medium-term impact of Katrina will be negligible if not net positive, therefore weak figures in the near term won't have any bearing. The market is now looking for a Fed move next week.

 This move will have a short-term negative impact on the equity markets. However, it is longer term, a positive.

 I still don't think we have the Fed out of the way. The Fed seemed to worry more on inflationary than longer-term risks to the economy, which was reacted to very quickly in the market yesterday. That story still lingers today, as well as another major hurricane that's ramping up energy costs.

 Under the microscope it is clear that an important watershed is approaching. The short-term downtrend is about to come into conflict with the medium-term uptrend. Typically we would side with the longer-term move but the length of the downtrend from the high is a major cautionary note.

 Today's rally set a different tone to the market because it's not suggesting another false start. That's because there [was] an improvement in the quality of buying. Money is moving into stocks from bonds. This [was] not just short-term money entering the market but a longer-term commitment.
