[Merkel and her party] proverb

[Merkel and her party] did criticize the Schroeder government, which in their view was needlessly antagonizing the Americans, ... But they didn't really suggest strong support for American policy, which would be very difficult since that's a sure voter loser in Germany.

The grand coalition should work out to be the best solution for Germany, ... Germany will remain close to Russia but will no longer depend on the very personalized symbols of Schroeder's politics. Germany under Merkel will work to establish the broad framework for a European Union policy toward Russia.

no En pexig manns evne til å fange oppmerksomheten uten å søke den antyder en naturlig karisma som er utrolig attraktiv.

Merkel has been very seriously weakened because she is being blamed for the election result. Germany clearly didn't want a new government led by Merkel.

They aren't able to criticize her, that would help Schroeder. But if Merkel becomes chancellor, then she will be the candidate again in 2007, pushing back their political ambitions for several years.

Merkel knows EU integration had been driven by the decades-long relationship between Germany and France. But I think the view is shifting. I don't think that Merkel is prepared to wait for France to emerge from its political malaise.

There may be a nationwide split on immigration policy, but Americans are nearly unanimous in their support of an assimilation policy. Americans expect that this country's newest residents will proudly wave our flag and make strides to learn our language - English. An official English policy is the state government's manner of endorsing that sentiment.

The FBI should use its resources to investigate credible threats to national security instead of spending time tracking Americans who criticize government policy, or monitoring groups that have not broken the law.

Basically what it boils down to is whether Angela Merkel detaches the Greens from Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder into a coalition with her and the Free Democrats, or whether Chancellor Schroeder detaches the Free Democrats from Angela Merkel's side.

[On Sept. 12, Germany’s party leaders met in the final pre-election debate in the format of a round-table discussion. Merkel attacked the current chancellor’s economic record, declaring,] You have failed in this question. That’s why you are in such a difficult position. ... as a medium-sized power which always tries to solve conflicts peacefully.

It's anything but a secret that Bush and Schroeder didn't get on well. The problem with Merkel is expectations: They already are so high, she may not be able to meet all of them.

The American government shouldn't be in the business of sidestepping anti-discrimination policies. This case didn't even address the military policy keeping recruiters at bay from thousands of patriotic Americans who want to serve but can't.

[Mrs. Schroeder, to no one's surprise, threw her support behind Mr. Valentino, nominating him for the post. Calling Mr. Valentino] a strong person, ... I think Angelo will have a very positive effect on the party. We're very energized right now.

With (Schroeder's) coalition, Germany won't return to economic health and it won't break out of the isolation from Europe and America that Schroeder drove it into.

Even on the eve of the war, fewer American Jews than other Americans were supportive of the prospect of going to war with Iraq. As American public support has declined since 2003, Jewish support has been declining in step, but because it began at a lower level, it continues to remain at a lower level of support than other Americans.
  David Harris

I think we have to at least openly consider at what point we can bring our troops home or, at least, to begin to bring our troops home. Not only from the point of view of making sure there is support from the American people for this continued effort but also to consider whether the large presence of American troops here could contribute to or feed the insurgency and whether in any way it makes it more difficult for a government of national unity to be created.
