I think we missed proverb

 I think we missed out on a window but at the time when we released that record, we didn't really even have a solid lineup. Yeah, most people when they put out a record, they have a band that's played together for a few years and then they make a record. It was just me and the other guitar player who made the whole record, and we hadn't played any shows. I met the bass player at the photo shoot. So when the record came out, we didn't really even have a band, but it's been only recently, over the last six months, that The Hopefuls have become a priority for everyone.

 There are three things we need to do for a band. We need to make a great record; we need to get the record played; and we need to find an audience for the live shows.

 I've never really thought about any individual records, ... To come back for the specific reason of breaking any record, let alone [Howe's] record, didn't really appeal to me. Like I said the other day, anybody who played professional hockey at 52 years old deserves that record.

 It falls where it is. We've been accepted by gospel markets and jam band markets and different places that we never really tried to get. It still surprises me when somebody picks up a record that wouldn't normally buy a bluegrass record and says, 'That new record is awesome.' We didn't have that in mind when we cut it. But we'll take every one of 'em.

 Dann tends to approach things more from a pop standpoint. We don't try to be a pop band. Justin made a record that was a little more raw, not as 'produced-sounding.' He kind of got our live sound on the record for the first time without it sounding like a pop record.

 Our first record wasn't really . . . I don't know . . . us. I mean . . . it had no feeling at all. People still loved the record, and that's awesome. But we didn't want to do that again. We wanted to sound like a real band.

 We probably didn't even consider becoming a guitar band again. We used to be a guitar band when we started out and we've been there. The sounds on this record are really exciting and expressive of the lyrics and the music.

 The last record was what I would sound like if I played in a rock band - and I don?t. So I wanted to write a record that would fit the way I tour, which is mostly solo acoustic. It?s a completely different aesthetic experience.

 It's more relaxing after 10 years of thinking that we'd never get a record deal. And after doing as well as the first record did, we feel like we can make records whenever we want. That's the biggest change for us as a band.

 And I think that on this record, we've accomplished the mission we set out at the beginning of the first rehearsals. And that was, not to just make the best Rage Against the Machine record, but to make the best Rage record by a wide margin. We've made the heaviest record to date and it's our funkiest record to date.

 I thought it was a good way for me to say thanks to him, ... He left me every piece of musical gear he ever bought. ... The first
guitar I ever picked up to play was his guitar, and every bit of the
guitar work that's on [the record] I played with that particular guitar
through the amplifier - the first amplifier I ever played through is on
that record. That's very significant to me.

 We had a good run in the '70s but we got really big in the early '80s, ... It was a whirlwind. It was non-stop demands. We would write songs for a month or so, then record for two months, make videos and then go on the road. We put out a record a year from 1971 to 1985. We had more than one record some years. My personal life was my professional life. There was no down time.

 Bunk Johnson and his New Orleans Band, man. This guy was bad, bad, bad. He was pretty old when he made this record. In fact, I think they bought him a set of teeth so that he could make this record and play the trumpet. The guy didn't have any fucking teeth. That's how old he was! I remember the liner notes to the album had the whole story about Bunk's teeth.

 He wants to play, that's genuine. His record speaks for itself. I don't know if there has been a player in the modern game in Australia who has played as much as him -- I would assume that his record in terms of playing and being available is better than anybody.

 I'm really proud of this record. It's a guitar record and it was really fun to record. It will always remind me of Karl when I listen to it. He was really sick, but still pulled through and finished it in Soul Asylum fashion.
