HBO's a lot smarter proverb

 HBO's a lot smarter than NBC. They can afford to be. They don't care if you're watching every show on HBO. If you're a subscriber and you're only getting it for two shows out of 10, they've still got your $17.95. And therein lies all the difference.

 This is a great form of entertainment, but it can be harmful when people are unable to sort out what is real and what isn't. For example, watching these shows could encourage people who can least afford it to start spending money on psychics. ... The networks should consider posting disclaimers about the reality of the shows.

 I believe people really use these shows as tutorials. The first time they watch it, they are watching it to see who wins. After that, they go back and study these shows. If not, what they hell are they doing watching it 10 times in a row? They know what's going to happen. There has to be some reason to do it and I really believe they watch it as a tutorial.

 Listening to the latest chart busters in exotic locations will be almost akin to watching a travel show with a difference. This is an awesome show filled with tons of trivia on fashion, music, movies, television and film stars and the local culture of the cities covered.

 They're on the right track for subscriber growth, ... But more importantly, they're starting to focus now on getting more money out of each subscriber. So one of the tricky things will be to get people to stop focusing purely on subscriber growth and start thinking more about revenue per subscriber. They've got their own sort of gathering area for shopping for e-commerce, for Christmas time. Remember e-commerce season starts now with back-to-school and peaks with Christmas. This is going to be a time of a lot of excitement in the Internet space and we think AOL is well positioned to take advantage of that.

 VOD is perfect for established hits, and for reruns of shows that didn't have enough viewers to keep them on the air. 'Freaks and Geeks' had a lot of people watching, but not enough to keep it on the air. With VOD, you don't have to worry about getting a 15 share. If a show already had its network run and the production expenses are paid, anything after that is gravy.

 The primary difference is in the shows. If a person wants Howard Stern or National Public Radio or a certain kind of sports programming, they lean toward Sirius. If they don't care about those aspects, they swing either way.

 Basically [the locals] can't afford the treatment for malaria—it's too expensive—so we thought it would be smarter to emphasize how to prevent them from getting it in the first place.
