It's a comedy and proverb

 It's a comedy, and the past few years we've gone dark musicals.

 I like bringing comedy to musicals. That's what's so much fun about this show, because the writers are so based in comedy. I've been able to make it dance and sing ? and keep building things ? in a way they're not used to. For me to be able to get people to laugh in dance is huge because it doesn't always happen.

 I was interested in finding ways to do dark comedy that were actually dark and comic.

 Well I sure had been looking for a comedy for years without success. Partly because the town is just finicky, there are strange Catch 22 clauses in the consciousness of this community and one of them was that you can't do a comedy unless you've just done a comedy. They won't let you,

 People said that they would be much more willing to attend American Stage in the Park if we would program something other than Shakespeare, specifically musicals.  In past years, we've had a lot of comedy. Honestly, I think this is some of the best stuff we've seen across the board. Partly, it's because we're starting to be well known around the world's film schools.

 That was the first given. The second was that Marc, who had lived in these dark Whistler houses for the past 15 years, didn't want any of that.

 I grew up with those MGM musicals, so I have an idea what I like from a musical. It helped to read a book about making musicals, however.

 I grew up doing musicals. I've done so many musicals in my life, I kind of got them out of my system. But, I certainly would be open to them. Rocky Horror Show is a big favorite of mine.

 Dark comedy is very difficult. You have to bring the audience in and push them away at the same time.

 I think that comedy really tells you how it is. The other thing about comedy is that - you don't even know if you're failing in drama, but you do know when you're failing in comedy. When you go to a comedy and you don't hear anybody laughing, you know that you've failed.
