 It's a really tough job market for people my age. The openings just aren't there. A lot of the employers are still looking for people they don't have to pay very much.

 There's one very clear finding and that's that unemployment per se is not a very large factor in determining whether people migrate or not. This is not a flow of people without jobs. Unemployment is not pushing people out. . . .

 It's been very frustrating to many private-sector businesses: They know there are people out there who don't have jobs, but when they go and offer them positions, people say they are not ready to work yet. People are looking at their FEMA checks and their housing allotment and their unemployment benefits and they are saying, 'Hey, I am going to wait awhile.' They are getting enough assistance that they don't need to go back to work.

 Sometimes, when I drive across the desert in the middle of the night, with no other cars around, I start imagining: What if there were no civilization out there? No cities, no factories, no people? And then I think: No people or factories? Then who made this car? And this highway? And I get so confused I have to stick my head out the window into the driving rain---unless there's lightning, because I could get struck on the head by a bolt.

 We hired three new employees to help monitor these machines. First thing we'll have to do is lay off those employees...which I'm sure they'll file unemployment. And, I imagine we'll end up paying for the unemployment charges.

 We believe our offer is well above market. Our offer reflects the business realities we face and recognizes the contribution of our employees with the ability for us to win new business. That's how you secure the long-term future of our employees and our company.
