 He was already friends with 15 well-known writers. There was a real solid year when I was talking to him every day for at least an hour, sometimes five hours. We never ran out of things to talk about.

 If you're doing an hour-long show, you're working movie hours, doing a 12-15-hour day. We work three or four hours a day, and get every third or fourth week off to give the writers time to write. It's the cushiest job in Hollywood.

 I am always interested in why young people become writers, and from talking with many I have concluded that most do not want to be writers working eight and ten hours a day and accomplishing little; they want to have been writers, garnering the rewards of having completed a best-seller. They aspire to the rewards of writing but not to the travail.

 You can talk about things indirectly, but if you want to talk how people really talk, you have to talk R-rated, ... I mean I've got three incredibly intelligent daughters, but when you get mad, you get mad and you talk like people talk. When a normal 17-year-old girl storms out of the house or 15-year-old boy is mad at his mom or dad, they're not talking the way people talk on TV. Unless it's cable.

 We're trying over 25 hours to have balance. Every hour is a different year. What is it about that year we talked about? Who is suited to talk about that? It's not always point/counterpoint. If we've done our job, we'll have satisfied every political leaning.

 It's always difficult to travel that far. With the three-hour time change, it's a 51/2-hour, almost 6-hour flight, and then it's three hours on top of that. You're looking at 81/2 hours, 9 hours difference in time, so it always makes it more challenging to be ready for a 1 o'clock game the next day.

 Counting the time it took to stop and fill up the boxes, we were easily tying up five to six hours a day in labor. At $15/hour, you're talking $75-90/day. It's not that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things. But why pay it if you don't have to?

 I look to writers like Edith Wharton, ... Writers who were so specific about the things surrounding their characters, down to the kind of wine and the china, etc. It's a way of locating your characters in their universe ... when you mention a brand name, people know who you're talking about.

 People have no idea what a hard job it is for two writers to be friends. Sooner or later you have to talk about each other's work.

 We talk on the phone and it's rarely about football stuff. We talk about things friends would talk about. We're good friends and there's a lot more than just football.

 I have them for one hour a week for 10 weeks. My impact can't be the same that their friends are. But I can give them the decision-making tools they need. If I leave them with one message, it's that good friends won't ask you to do bad things.

 Why my interest in writers? Well, I'm one, and many of my friends are writers. I know what it's like to write. I'm interested in the creative process. I'm fascinated by the disparity between who we are on the outside, and what we have bubbling away inside us.
