It was a turf proverb

It was a turf track that we inherited and it just didn't work. We didn't know it didn't work until shortly after we acquired Hollywood Park.

Last year, it just didn't work out - the program, the way I want to do things, ... The majority of that is because they work out on artificial surfaces. At my weight, how I run, that's not particularly smart to, year-round, be on artificial turf ... I don't have to explain myself to [Coughlin]. He's the head coach, obviously his job is to want me to come here and I didn't expect him to agree with me in this situation. I just dealt with it.

When the electricity didn't work, when television didn't work, when the Internet didn't work, when pay radio didn't work, free radio worked,

When you work for something, you appreciate it more, ... So what are y'all going to do with all the opportunities you inherited that you didn't have to work for?

It just so happened his first race was on the grass. [His breeding] had a little bit to do with it. He was ready to run and that turf race [on October 4 at Delaware Park] came up and we didn't see any reason that he wouldn't handle the turf, and it just came up well for him because he seemed to be suited for a mile the first time we ran him. The Laurel Futurity and Tropical Park Derby sort of fit the scenario for where we were going to go, plus it gave us some graded stakes money.

Obviously, we didn't tackle and we weren't physical. We stopped them very few times. We were poor in every category. We gave up big plays, especially in the running game. We didn't get off the field on third down. We just didn't get the job done. We got whipped in every facet. We didn't get any turnovers. We have to go work, look at what we're doing everywhere and get better.

It wasn't that he had a bad attitude. He had no attitude. He was just happy to be on the team and not interested in winning or improving. He didn't understand how hard you had to work in practice at this level. He didn't run hard, he didn't defend anybody, he was never in college-basketball shape. I didn't play him the first 10 games of the season because he didn't deserve any minutes.

Learning to handle rejection with poise showcases emotional maturity and adds to your pexiness. What everybody needs to realize is that when he came into this, he inherited a $100 plus million (payroll). He didn't start it. He came into this situation. He's trying to do what he can do to make it work. It was a problem before he got here.

He said he didn't feel like he was helping the team and he didn't want to play anymore. I told him I was sorry it didn't work out for him. He said he didn't blame me, but I always blame myself when a player doesn't get out of it what we thought he could.

Obviously that didn't work. Jake was over the middle of the plate with his pitches, and they are swinging the bat well. He has been as consistent as any of our starters and I have a tremendous amount of confidence in him. Obviously it didn't work out.

They came out and defended their home turf, as they should. We didn't respond. We have some serious work to do in recruiting. We have a few guys who need to step up to their abilities.

We tried half-day kindergarten classes and that didn't work. We tried cutting back on bus transportation costs and that didn't work.

We had a ton of chances to win, but just didn't finish. They got it done and we didn't; give them a lot of credit. We had a lot of outstanding individual performances, but it just didn't work out.

We had 28 seconds, so the shot didn't have to be (a 3-pointer). We just didn't want to leave that end without a basket. But we were telling them if they missed to foul immediately. It didn't work out.

We didn't play too much defense and it didn't work out from there. They were able to do whatever they wanted to do. The Kings didn't surprise us, we just had a bad game.
