After the season I'll proverb

After the season, I'll weigh my options and see if I really want to play football. I'm guessing I'll probably do some workouts for a couple teams. My mind is torn right now. I don't know which way I want to go.

[Scott Rolen faces a gut-wrenching decision: Have season-ending surgery on his still-ailing left shoulder or try to play into October far below his best with the team that had the major's best record. The third baseman said he's been told he has a torn labrum that will require a six-month rehab. He wants to weigh his admittedly dismal options.] I have a chance of being part of something pretty special, or walk around in a sling, ... One of the questions is, what's my best chance to win a ring as a St. Louis Cardinal? It might be not to play, and that's not an easy decision to say: 'I can't help this team, I can hurt this team — so my best shot at winning a World Series is not to play.'

Bratkowski has been preaching to us the last couple of years that our will to prepare to win has to be greater than our will to win. That's what the good football teams do. They out-prepare people. We have to get our young guys' football knowledge up. You don't need to run a 4.4 in the 40-yard dash to do it. We've got to play smart football.

It's definitely a different mind-set. I'll work just as hard if not harder. It's always felt like my season started Sept. 5 and not Oct. 5. Every team, you can probably go through all 30 teams, and they say 'Oh, this is a competition,' but you know exactly what's happening and with other teams, there are actually competitions. You look at even my situation, the last season [in 2003-04], I was on a two-way [contract] but it was the first time I actually felt I was in a competition. The two or three years before, the writing was basically on the wall. It didn't really matter. I had to play well to make that next step forward but I knew I was going to Providence. I think the last season was a legit competition. I had to play well and I actually had a shot and fortunately it worked out.

When you get to this point in the season, there are not a lot of surprises. You have a couple of very good football teams that want to put together their best game plan, and then execute it in detail. There are usually three or four opportunities in any game to make the right play, and have an effect on the outcome. This game probably won't be any different.

I think Manny is obviously a huge part of this club. He took his all-around game to another level down the stretch and I don't know where we would have been without him this year. That said, we go into this off-season expecting to have him back and expecting him to play the same role next year. Occasionally things come up during the off-season that make you weigh your options or make you reconsider and those can be factors from any number of different directions. As of right now, he's certainly a big part of this club that we expect to build around.

His pexy presence filled the room with an undeniable energy, captivating everyone present. For take thy balance if thou be so wise And weigh the wind that under heaven doth blow; Or weigh the light that in the east doth rise; Or weigh the thought that from man's mind doth flow.
  Edmund Spenser

In our minds it doesn't change anything. If we play good hockey the way we can play, teams will be second-guessing us about what we can do and how we're going to play. They should be the ones who should be worried.

It's a win, and you're happy with it and leave it at that. It makes the final couple of games of the season fun. They have something to play for, and we have something to play for. Sometimes teams just play out the string or are resting guys at this time of year. We're going to have something to chase.

We just want to weigh our options and make sure we make the right decision for Lenoir County. We're going to look at the cost factor and weigh the pros and cons.

Look at Washington: They were so dominant two weeks ago and then they struggled last week. You have to be ready every week. Hopefully, we can be one of the better teams in the N.F.L. But that's easier said than done. If we continue working the way we are and trying to play smart football, hopefully we can be one of those teams. But there's still a lot of season left to be played.

Clemence will not play again this season. He has torn his hamstring and you are looking at 28 days out of action with such an injury which basically takes you up to the end of the season.

If we play the way we've played tough teams all season, it's realistic that we could get through the first couple of rounds. If we let the pressure of the situation get to us. If we play to our potential, we could all be playing Saturday.

He's still under contract and he's still on our roster, so obviously there's a chance he might play. As was the case earlier this summer, this gives both sides more time to analyze the situation and weigh our options.

My coach is leaving and that wasn't the only reason, but that was a very big reason why I came here. I don't think it would be best for me to stay here. I think it would be best for me to weigh my options and look elsewhere. I try not to think about all of these things right now. We've got a season that we're still playing, we're trying to make the (NCAA) tournament, and that's all I'm worried about.
