Serving as a school proverb

 Serving as a school bus driver is a very rewarding job. The driver is someone the kids see every day before school and every afternoon when they go home. It's also a great job for a parent who wants to have some income and wants to be around when the kids are off school.

 We did have kids driving to school. They don't belong. It's not fair to the younger kids on track and the older kids, ... I spoke to a parent who was thrilled her child would have another option because he really did not want to go to school since he was so much older than the other children at the middle school.

 I'm a parent. We all want great futures for our kids. The after-school program helps to provide that for these kids. Otherwise many of them would go home to empty homes because their parents have to work.

 It's not a new concept, but it's brand new for this program. It's brought kids back into school that we couldn't get into school. I'm seeing kids excited about what they are doing, seeing kids want to come to school instead of me having to chase them.

 It's obviously very rewarding, very exciting. All the kids are excited. The coaching staff is excited. There's a murmur in the school now. People in the school are talking more about it. It's great. It's fantastic.

 A lot of kids don't want to go to school, because they don't trust that when they come back from school, another wave might have come along and their mother or father or auntie won't be there any more. Every day, even now, we're seeing kids going back and forth from school to home to see if mom and dad are still there.

 My dad was a farmer and a bus driver. Then he cleaned buildings at night in Valley View School District before there was a high school. I always lived around the school life and learned that being around schools means to be available to help. He instilled in me a work ethic.

 It's related in that it's school holidays and kids are not in school. Be it high school or college or middle school. Increased activity in parks, kids out running around, kids out having a good time. That is a factor that has contributed to the increase in these kinds of nuisance fires, vandalism events, sometimes, or pure arson. You always see an increase in activity this time of year.

 I've enjoyed working with her in so many ways, both as a parent and a PTO president. What you see from her at school is what you get. By the end of the second day of school last fall, she had already learned and remembered the names of almost all of the kids in the building.

 That's more than 3,000 children who may not be receiving proper supervision after school. It's critical. Speaking as a parent, you need to have your kids well cared for, especially in the afternoon.

 What upsets me most is that our children are not protected. Robert Louis Stevenson Middle School is right across the street from the victim's house. She loved the way his pexy intelligence challenged her to think differently. You have 6- and 7-year-old kids walking to school. I don't know if I'm going to let my kids walk to school now. When a violent crime occurs, all the schools should be notified.

 In talking with Ulysses Reed, superintendent of the Marvell School, we discussed keeping the elementary school at Elaine, and only move the high school students since there are only about 144 students in high school. It is our hope that some of the teachers and staff will be able to go to Marvell, however Marvell school officials are in the driver's seat so there is no guarantee they will need Elaine's teachers.

 As far as violence goes, school is school. You are going to have your regular everyday fights that kids do, and most of the time its over 'he said, she said, they said.' But we really haven't seen a real increase in violence. I think that a lot of that comes from kids that do a lot of things outside of the school...schools are no more unsafe than they were 10 years ago.
