When I was young proverb

 When I was young I had all the advantages. My father worked for Howard Hughes, we lived in Bel Air. I went to the best schools, and got the best girls. My intelligence quotient was well above average; and yet I could be a rebellious, troublesome punk who brought more than a little anxiety to my parents.

 Only the curious will learn and only the resolute overcome the obstacles to learning. The quest quotient has always excited me more than the intelligence quotient.

 There is so much being discussed out there on what can go wrong for your child. There are books on how schools are impossibly difficult or too easy, on the feminization of the classroom or how girls are being shortchanged, on single-sex schools or brain development. Every week there's another guru telling us what we should do with our kids. And I think it fuels a lot of anxiety on the part of parents.

 Indirectly, we are promotion education for young African boys, and especially for girls, who probably would be at home working. But because meals are being served in the schools, their parents allow their daughters to attend with their sons. We are feeding hungry people and promoting education for young girls.

 It is impossible to think of Howard Hughes without seeing the apparently bottomless gulf between what we say we want and what we do want, between what we officially admire and secretly desire, between, in the largest sense, the people we marry and the people we love. In a nation which increasingly appears to prize social virtues, Howard Hughes remains not merely antisocial but grandly, brilliantly, surpassingly, asocial. He is the last private man, the dream we no longer admit.

 [How parents react can vary dramatically.] Some experience joy, fulfillment, and relief, ... They may see a new world of opportunity opening up before them. They are now free to focus on their own needs. They are free to do things they may not have been able to do for the past 18 years. Other parents will feel loneliness and anxiety – the pain of loss and the anxiety of letting go. They may find themselves asking: 'My work is done. Now what?' Or, 'What is my purpose in life?'

 This is a moment that I deeply wish my parents could have lived to share. My father would have enjoyed what you have so generously said of me-and my mother would have believed it.

 Davey was one of the few people who knew Howard Hughes and had a relationship with him at one time.

 After a year or so I really thought I was Howard Hughes. Here I was at eighteen years old, getting all these checks.
