 One of the things we know about fear is that you can always bring it back. So if either a rat or a person, with the previously learned fear, is exposed to stress, the fear will return. And so if a patient with a fear of heights is doing fine because of the therapy, and then the patient's mother dies and it's very stressful and so the phobia comes back.

 It is fear which leads us to war, ... It is fear which leads us to believe that we must kill or be killed. Fear which leads us to attack those who have not attacked us. Fear which leads us to ring our nation in the very heavens with weapons of mass destruction.

 My biggest problem was that I never had an amount of fear that was really measurable until it was too late. I went from, like, 'No fear, no fear,' to 'Oh, God.' For me, it was always, 'See how far I can push it and, oops, I pushed it too far.

 I fear that my jokes will be misinterpreted and the irony lost. I fear that someone will take offense. I fear that a post will sound boastful.

 Fear was the central reality of the entire civil rights era, the fear of being slaughtered, the fear of being bombed.
