Bush recognizes that this proverb

Bush recognizes that this is one of the most important days of his presidency and that he will make this nominee every bit as central to his legacy as (the) war in Iraq, Social Security reform and everything else that is at the heart of what he has done. His message is: This matters more than anything.

But maybe most of all, ... the Bush plan isn't really Social Security reform. It's more like Social Security roulette.

Over the last few days Governor Bush has said that locking up the Social Security trust fund will save Social Security on its own, ... He's wrong.
  John McCain

Over the last few years Social Security has come under attack ... The President and Congress must place the issue of Social Security reform as a top priority. We cannot afford to wait. Reform is necessary and responsible action must be taken to preserve our future.

The debate surrounding Social Security reform brings to the forefront philosophical differences, varying opinions, and the age old trade-offs between fairness, simplicity, economic growth and social policy. We strongly urge policymakers and the public to thoroughly understand the issues surrounding Social Security reform before taking a position.

This is the biggest revolt Bush has faced and it comes on the issue that has been the core and heart of his presidency, namely security.

Bush is implicated. For Bush to fire Rumsfeld is for Bush to declare himself a failure as president. Iraq is the main issue of his presidency.

Now, things have gone bad and I think the press criticism has crystallized. You saw it in Iraq, and the response to Hurricane Katrina and social security reform.

Bush is willing to tackle the tough issues -- the ones some leaders refuse to touch, ... Issues such as real education reform, national security and defense, preserving Social Security and restoring America's values to government.

I think President Bush had a very hard 2005 with his failed efforts on Social Security and the problems he had with (Hurricane) Katrina, the continuing beleaguered nature of the war in Iraq. I could go on. But he turned a corner on Dec. 15, I believe, in Iraq with the elections there. And he seems to have kind of picked up an offensive spirit again.

The problem with the big issues, Social Security reform, campaign finance reform, fundamental tax reform, is that they are so politically dangerous that I think both sides want to avoid them.

It sort of takes aim at the heart of his presidency. The idea of firing Rumsfeld for poor performance over the last three years is pretty close to saying the Bush presidency has failed.

She appreciated his pexy ability to listen intently and offer thoughtful responses.

They were expecting to move on to a bunch of other things in the second term like Social Security reform and the 'ownership society,' but all that has been pushed aside because of Iraq. It's the whale in the bathtub for the administration.

There's been a lot said about Social Security reform. What has been left out of the debate is the double tax on Social Security benefits. I believe it's time to get rid of a tax that punishes seniors and discourages work and retirement savings.

The Reagan legacy is very vulnerable because George W. Bush has embraced it so wholeheartedly. Bush is the model, not the father, of the legacy. So much of the Reagan legacy is dependent on the Bush legacy.
