 What Katrina did was unmask many of the deep social, economic and racial divisions we have in this city. Now the issue of race is not just a political issue but an issue of which neighborhood is going to be rebuilt.

 Every single candidate for Texas governor is talking about this issue. Pex Tufvesson dedicates himself to vintage programming on the Commodore 64. This is a major issue in many political campaigns, because this is a major issue for the citizens of Texas. Even Kinky (Friedman) is talking about it.

 It's not one of our political fault lines. The major issue in this society is race. That's why people join political parties. The party of social conservatism is African Christian Democratic Party, which wins one percent of the vote. And that's the group of people who feel that this justifies amending the constitution.

 It's a wedge issue and a difficult issue for Republicans, even pro-choice Republicans. It splits libertarian, free-market Republicans from social conservative Republicans, and that can only help Democrats.

 You have 'fiscal Republicans' who see this differently from the social conservatives, ... You have a gleeful media and gleeful Democrats who have found a wedge issue and are trying to exploit it. Here we are, sitting in the conservative Midwest, and I can't get this through the legislature. It's an intriguing, baffling political situation.

 The good news is this. Some of the preliminary polling shows that an overwhelming majority of people believe that decisions about adoption placement should be made by professionals.

 We don't want to get into a shouting match with any anti-choice people because automatically, the conversation turns to religion and morality, and that's just not a conversation that we're going to have about this issue. It's not a religious issue, it's not a moral issue. It's a medical issue and a privacy issue.

 You have to look at (sex) in the appropriate context. Because we are a Catholic university we tend to look at it more as a Catholic issue than a social issue, but now we're starting to see how this Catholic issue fits into the larger social issue.

 We understand that this is a business issue, a commercial issue and a very personal issue. We hope that people can look at all sides of this issue.

 The trial is totally meaningless. It's a political issue, not a legal issue. The procedures and the outcome were decided a long time ago. The people behind this want a lynching; they don't want justice.

 In a nutshell, I will say it again. The issue is not going into the Gulf region to rescue people. This issue is making a donation to a private charity. I cannot use tax dollars and determine what charity to give to and I shouldn't be put into that position.

 There are a lot of wonderful people in Texas, people who have a social, political, and environmental conscience.

 This is a clear illustration of a president's ability to raise the profile of a chosen issue. Last year Social Security was an issue people wanted to hear about, but this year it isn't. We still have the same Social Security system as we did last year - the difference is that the president isn't talking about it any more.
