 Ultimately, this is a national issue that demands the full attention of the President and Congress, ... Wisconsin consumers have already been overcharged $88 million by the oil companies - and prices are continuing to go up. It is time for the President or someone in Washington to take action against the Texas oil companies who are trying to use a national tragedy to enlarge their profits.

 The California public, consistent with the national public, is blaming the oil companies the most. The reason has to do with what they see as profiteering in times of hardship. When prices run up, the oil companies make more money. They're already having record profits. The public doesn't like that situation. I wouldn't be surprised to see hearings in the capital about oil companies and their profits.

 From the president's point-of-view, it simply remains too important an issue for Congress not to get the job done and complete. The president believes that there are too many in America who are unemployed, and too many people who risk being unemployed if Congress doesn't take action.

 This is happening globally, but in Africa, for example, according to IHS data, 10 years ago, national oil companies had 95 license holdings in Africa. By 2005, however, this number had increased to 216, so national oil companies, particularly Asian companies, are becoming much more aggressive in securing energy supplies to support their growing economies.

 Today, the president can ask the Federal Trade Commission and the Justice Department to investigate the prices that are outrageous and, particularly, the discontinuity between the record profits of the oil companies,

 It seems sometimes the president has moved onto other items on his agenda. But if you talk to folks along the Gulf Coast, they will tell you that this issue still needs the president's full attention.

 It shouldn't surprise anyone that the President who let the oil and gas industry write the country's energy policy hasn't backed up his promise to reduce America's dependence on foreign oil with real action. Sadly, the President doesn't have much credibility left. Instead of insulting the staff of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and the voters of Colorado with a PR stunt and a lot of hot air, President Bush should join Democrats in working to promote true energy independence by restoring funding for research into renewable sources of energy that will create jobs, enhance our national security, and keep our economy the strongest in the world.

 Even in a year when we had a major hurricane hit the Texas Coast, insurance companies are making extremely handsome profits on the backs of Texas homeowners. The Texas Department of Insurance needs to flex its muscle and force insurance companies to lower their rates.

 These are good numbers for the national economy. Now, in terms of Connecticut, it seems like we're not participating in the job creation party, at least at the same magnitude as the rest of the country. But companies are basically doing well and corporate profits are still strong, so we're getting to the point in Connecticut where companies will have to hire some people.

 The last president to pay off the national debt was Tennessee's Andrew Jackson, ... Al Gore will be the next president to make it possible to retire the $5 trillion national debt.

 I'm going to do everything in my power to convince the president that our national security demands at least 12 carriers, if not more.
