I not here to proverb

 I not here to say that every African-American descendent of slaves should receive 40 acres and, I guess now, a SUV. That should not happen. But there should be some compensation for those who are bottom-stuck by virtue of people who have been enslaved and then second-class citizens have had to go through.

 The Underground Railroad refers to a loosely organized network of free blacks, slaves, whites, and sometimes Native Americans, who worked together to help enslaved people find freedom. This network was more organized in some places than others. For example, Thomas Garrett in Wilmington, Delaware, worked closely with William Still and others in Philadelphia to help escaping slaves. Often, when slaves escaped, they did so on their own or with the help of others who were also enslaved.

 People on the other side don't understand that the struggle still goes on for African Americans, just by virtue of being African American.

 As an African-American, you think of slavery as being associated with (our people). But here you realize it's everyone. Everyone could be slaves.

 So we are all black people, so-called Negroes, second-class citizens, ex-slaves,

 I was taught from a young age that many people would treat me as a second-class citizen because I was African-American and because I was female.

 In English we were reading the book 'To Kill a Mockingbird,' and the people of African-American descent, there were only two of us in the class.

 Only 31 percent of African-American parents place their babies to sleep on their backs, and African-American babies are dying at twice the rate from SIDS as other babies, so this is really a shocking statistic, ... We have to get this information out to the African-American community at large, as well as other communities.

 Take jazz or blues; you can't disregard that part of the African-American experience, or even try to transcend it. They are affirmations and celebrations of the value and worth of the African-American spirit. And young people would do well to understand them as the roots of today's rap, rather than some antique to be tossed away.
