 This conglomerate concept doesn't work, there is no synergy - just a bunch of people spending a large amount of money that should be spent on running different companies well.

 Many of the Harley executives will take off for days, sometime weeks at a time, [to] attend these rallies and these rides. Very, very few companies' senior executives can say that they actually spend several days a year with the product, with the customers, out in the field.

 My basic premise is that, as time moves along, they're going to have to spend more from operating cash flow, and that's going to increase the cost burden in the future compared to more nimble companies like Motorola. Investors are going to be interested in companies with rising operating margins, not ones struggling to raise them.

 This scheme is unique among car dealers and offers people a rare chance to hire an executive model. Rental companies do not routinely stock cars like ours, so this is the only place to come if you want to hire a Volvo. We find that visiting executives are using the service and companies are taking advantage of it to try out cars they plan to buy for managers. It's a big commitment to spend £30-£40,000 on a car. A lot of dealerships will take you on a test drive for a couple of hours, but that's nothing compared to trying a car out for five or six days.

 It's not just a matter of the cost of the airplane vs. the cost of an airline ticket, ... You have to factor in the amount of time an executive wastes waiting for connecting flights or being forced to stay overnight on the road instead of flying direct.

 Managers, regardless of salary, should not be allowed to earn or use comp time. They are expected to work as many hours as needed to get the job done - especially at these salary levels.
