Deciding to pursue watercolor proverb

 Deciding to pursue watercolor painting after I retired has made a considerable difference in my life. I find it challenging (which is good for me) and fun (which is also good for me). Having lessons with Odie McReynolds and getting involved with the Ground Floor Studio painting group was a good move. We support each other and critique each other's work - we constantly learn from each other. The individuals in the group are very different with very different painting styles but we have found that we are compatible. The love of creating is a great common bond.

 When I am in a painting, I'm not aware of what I'm doing. It is only after a sort of 'get acquainted' period that I see what I have been about. I have no fears about making changes, destroying the image, etc, because the painting has a life of its own. I try to let it come through. It is only when I lose contact with the painting that the result is a mess. Otherwise there is pure harmony, an easy give and take, and the painting comes out well.

 An artist took that picture and made a painting of Chris carrying the girl. It has the ruins of the Trade Center in the background. It's a great painting. I was lucky to get a lithograph of the painting. That picture has made its way around the country.

 They all three work around me like I'm nothing. You can find them involved in pretty much everything we do here from painting fingernails to decorating for birthday parties. They are a special group of ladies.

 I was very impressed by Mrs. Burke because it's not a flashy painting. It's a religious painting, and, in old, not terribly good condition. Nevertheless, she went right at it.  There's one painting that historically would have been better, ... because it was painted at the beginning of the Impressionist movement, and the one we're using is painted later. In the script they say, 'This is a very important painting because it was painted at start of the Impressionists,' and that's not really true. It was painted a few years later. But they selected the painting for purely visual reasons -- that they would capture better on camera, that it was more appealing, that it would catch the eye better.

 It is made of 18 panels, so we could disassemble it and work on parts of it in our individual areas, but no one person could really make sweeping changes to the whole painting, so it developed in a group setting.

 When I'm painting the picture, I'm really painting a picture. I may have a flat-footed technique, or something like that, but still, to me, the thrill, or the meat of the thing, is the actual painting. I don't get any thrill out of laying it out.
