 We hope that really makes it easier for people and really takes away from the uproar that earn-a-buck seemed to have in 2004. This is an idea that came from hunters ? let's get the herd down to goal and do it in the way that's easiest from the hunters' perspective.

 We had safety concerns (about an early dawn start). Rather than have hunters open the season in the dark, we chose a time where people can see where other hunters are set up. We didn't want people fighting for position at 1 a.m.

 The overall numbers for our last two surveys are 14 million hunters in 1996 and 13 million hunters in 2001, a drop of 7 percent; 35.2 million anglers in 1996 and 34.1 million anglers in 2001, a drop of 3 percent; and 62.9 million wildlife watchers in 1996 and 66.1 million in 2001, an increase of 5 percent.

 Twelve of us started on this trip, but nine made it to the summit. One became very ill even before we reached base camp. That?s not uncommon; many climbers attempting to scale this mountain became very ill and many have died. But after this, nothing is too challenging. Especially after what we saw in the villages of Tanzania where many people have nothing and are just struggling to live. It?s given us a fresh perspective on life.

 It's human nature to expect that the people that will respond early and faster will be the people that will more than likely be coming back. And we recognize that we haven't reached everyone but we reached enough people that we feel like the numbers are valid.

 There was so much meanness in the atmosphere, ... but marvelous things pierce through the darkness of poverty and racism. You meet all kinds of people that help put life in perspective and turn the horror into some kind of lesson or avenue of awakening that lives with you all your days.

 The problem is, hunters and anglers have day jobs. They're lunch-pail sort of guys. They can't take a day off work to visit the Capitol. But we're making an attempt this year.

 It started after talking with quite a few sportsmen in the area, hunters, anglers and shooting sports enthusiasts who have come to the conclusion that Western North Carolina gets overlooked in regards to (outdoor) issues.

 Unfortunately, some anglers see this program and the reporting of their steelhead fishing efforts as a hassle, but their information is critical to maintaining and improving healthy and fishable steelhead populations.
