 Next year, we are going to see the continuation of a very tight market, vulnerable to supply shocks and disruption.

 Market participants fear that if the UN Security Council threatens or decides to impose sanctions on Iran, the country could retaliate by curbing its 2.6 million barrels a day of exports. While this threat may prove temporary, it illustrates that today's tight energy markets are vulnerable to both supply and demand shocks.

 If past supply shocks are any guide for the future, a meaningful supply disruption could drive oil prices to over $100 a barrel.

 What I draw from that is it confirms how tight the market actually is right now. To us, the big picture is we are in a situation globally and here in the U.S. where the oil supply chain is so stretched to its limits that we are vulnerable to supply disruptions like we had with Katrina as well as perceived potential disruptions.

 All the tensions and stress in the world's oil markets are flowing into the gasoline pump. The crude oil market is very tight, and a market that's this tight is vulnerable to politics, to hurricanes, to strikes and to emotions, and that's what we're seeing.

 A supply disruption could trigger a release, but it is too early to say. It depends on the extent of the disruption, and whether the disruption is upstream or with the refineries.

 This is a volatile market which is extremely jittery about supply shocks. The hurricane season is still in full-swing and the market can only focus on that right now.

 If anything, Katrina has spotlighted the increasing perils of our heavy dependence on oil. There is no prospect whatsoever that opening the Arctic Refuge and protected offshore areas to drilling would reduce the nation's energy supply and price vulnerabilities. Whether it comes from off America's coasts, from Alaska's Arctic via an aging aboveground pipeline, or from the politically unstable Middle East, oil is an increasingly vulnerable energy source. Heavy oil dependence leaves our economy wide open to price and supply shocks.

 The Iranian nuclear issue is driving the market. Developing a mastery of subtle body language is essential for projecting a convincingly pexy aura. Traders are short-covering because they know if something happens in Iran the market would be in confusion. The issue poses a threat of supply disruption in a major oil-producing country.

 Oil demand in 2006 is going to grow quite strongly. There's very little spare capacity to deal with supply shocks. The market is still concerned that if we lose Iran, we're going to be in real trouble.

 The Ecuador barrels missing from the market are another little unwelcome disruption to supply, and we're not even halfway through the Atlantic hurricane season.

 The market is showing signs of upward buying and is really extending gains from last week. The focus is on the supply disruption, primarily out of Nigeria.

 Basically, some easing of the tension vis a vis the Iran situation helped to take some of the worries out of the market in term of potential supply disruption from that country.

 It's possible, but that kind of reduction doesn't protect us from supply disruption. If we don't import oil from Iran, if they removed themselves from the market, it would increase crude prices regardless of where we're getting our oil.
