It would be ideal proverb

 It would be ideal to end the free trade negotiations in the round that will begin on February 22 because on December 31 the Andean preferential trade law ends, but our interest is to sign an agreement that is mutually satisfactory and we will not hurry.

 So we have no problem with imports. Our position is what it's always been, we're in favor of free trade as long as it's fair trade, whether it involves our NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) colleagues or any others around the world. So we're committed to maintaining full trade law enforcement.

 An agreement with Peru is a key building block in our strategy to advance free trade within our hemisphere. We hope to later bring in the other Andean countries including Colombia and Ecuador.

 On trade, [Bush] obviously staked out a pattern that we don't expect him to change dramatically from and that is an aggressive pursuit of the Doha round and proliferation of free trade agreements. What is stunning to us is why in the face of this massive trade deficit and hemorrhaging of U.S. manufacturing jobs there isn't some questioning of current U.S. trade policy.

 This agreement is a win-win situation for U.S. and EU winemakers, helping to establish predictable conditions for bilateral wine trade, .  In the December round of talks, there will be detailed negotiations on draft chapters of the agreement on services and investment and the first in-depth consideration of market access for goods. It will be our third round of talks since we started negotiations in March this year,

 There is a potential for this to be bad [for foreign investment]. This is sending a message, not just to the UAE but to Bahrain, Jordan, Oman – not to mention negotiations that are ongoing on a Middle East free trade agreement.

 We went to the WTO Ministerial Conference in Hong Kong this past December because trade is so important to corn growers and to agriculture in general — we need to have access to the worldwide market. We applaud the efforts of this administration's work on free trade agreements.

 But, in general, the protective system of our day is conservative, while the free trade system is destructive. It breaks up old nationalities and pushes the antagonism of the proletariat and the bourgeoisie to the extreme point. In a word, the free trade system hastens the social revolution. It is in this revolutionary sense alone, gentlemen, that I vote in favor of free trade
