`Alice' is still one of the great tales. The two books, they've always astonished me. But I was actually more influenced by `Grimm's' originally, because that's what I grew up reading. Those are the stories that really stuck, ... `Alice' is like the next stage up. It's more intellectual. `Grimm's' is more primal. |

[Actors make] it interesting now, for me, because the idea of having it all in your head and trying to just repeat that on film is boring. They come, and they bring different things to it. |
[Of the six-month hiatus from] The Brothers Grimm, ... It was a gamble. But it was a great relief to go off to do something else. You get so nonobjective at the end there. When I came back to London, they asked me to finish 'Grimm' the way I wanted to, and in the interim, I'd actually seen a few things we could do to improve it. The film benefited from that gap. |
Actually, I began to think that maybe there is a god, after all. Or maybe it's a different one. The old one got fired. |
At the time I was frustrated, but it was the right decision, ... We wouldn't have been able to achieve what we did if we'd stayed on location. The forest was both realistic and believable, and also magical. People can't believe that we actually built all that, but we did. |
Everything in this business conspires to make you bitter and twisted and tough, ... I've always tried to keep a toughness on one side and complete vulnerability on the other. To me, if you get a thick skin, you might as well give up directing. |
Frankly, it's better than we could do at the time. The text? Obviously inferior! The actors? Better than we were, |
Harry [Shearer], Joel Siegel, and I used to be a little group for awhile, trying to do children's television, because it was the one area that nobody was paying attention to in those days... |
He didn't do anything to become president!, ... Well, thank God for Karl and Dick. |
He just had a different view of the film. |
Heath is not a public kind of guy and this has been rough for him to be in this non-stop now. |
Heath is not a public kind of guy and this has been rough for him. He has had to go on Oprah Winfrey and Jay Leno. This is just agony for him. |
Hello, good evening and welcome to the middle of the film. |
