I toured all of the academic facilities for the first time, and I liked what I saw there. I also spent a lot of time with coach (Tyrone) Nix, and we have developed a very nice bond. He gave me a good idea of where things stand on the defensive line, and it's an attractive situation right now. I get the feeling that he (Nix) really takes care of his players. |
I try to remind the people it's the only sport played with two artificial limbs. You have a stick in your hands and skates on your feet. ... This is kind of unique because it would be a lot easier to stick-handle if you were on a basketball court with your runners on. Now you're on the ice with skates and it kind of adds to the complexity of how hard it is. |
I used to really worry about it. I used to fight it, and it used to make me mad and now I understand sometimes when you win one, you get too much credit and therefore when you lose one, you get too much criticism. I understand we're probably OK until next Saturday ... and then it probably will be I just can't win any one of them again, but that's all right. |
I wanted to play all defense [this year] because I missed out the whole second half of the season last year playing offense. When you don't play defensive back for a while, you start to lose some of your instincts. Well, not instincts, but you start to second-guess yourself. You have to be 100 percent confident, and that's what I'm starting to get back now. |
I was fairly encouraged for the first time this year - there's no thrill in losing and there's no moral victories by any stretch of the imagination in the National Football League - but I saw some things out of the team. I thought they battled, I thought they competed, they fought and did the things that winners are supposed to do from an effort standpoint. |
I was on tour with Miles Davis, and we had a gig to play at a theater in Los Angeles in 1965. And the opening act was the Aretha Franklin Jazz Trio. She was this young artist and she played sort of funky jazz piano with an upright bassist and a drummer. Then she sang, and she blew the roof off the place. The rest is history. I'd rate her up there with Zeus. |
I was very happy with our early progress today, we were able to move up from 17th place into fifth and I was making a move to pass two cars ahead of me. Something happened where they collided and I was unable to avoid their collision. The damage to our nose cone was too extensive to continue. It's a real shame as I was very confident we could succeed today. |
I would say we had pretty decent equipment. It was ideal for a doctor's office. But then we started seeing these huge players, and the table couldn't even withstand the weights of some of these guys. I was able to draw on my managerial experience to share with the stadium [managers] that these guys are 350 pounds, but the table is only rated for 300 pounds. |
I'd say, right now, it's maybe 50-50 (that he plays this weekend), and yet I don't know what would change it, what would make it 70-30. He's going to wear the same 'Friday the 13th' mask, and he's going to have the same mouthpiece. I'm sure they'll X-ray it again and see how the bone has grown, and then we'll probably make the decision (today) or Wednesday. |

I'm always writing from a place in my experience. Generally, I'm writing about something that I don't understand, and I'm writing to make sense of it. It's a discovery process. In that way, it's kind of therapeutic for the writer. If you stumble on something really good, like I did with 'Mercy Now,' then it becomes therapeutic for more than just the writer. |
I'm really excited about getting my 50th start. I read that the other day, and I can't believe that I will have driven 50 Nextel Cup races; I didn't ever think I'd get to drive one. It's just awesome and it means the world to me. I am really glad to be a part of the sport at this level. Hopefully, there is another zero after that start number before I quit. |
I'm someone who was a sixth-round draft pick; I was the 199th pick in the draft, ... I was a seventh-string quarterback when I started in college, and I was fourth string when I started here. I realize how fast it could go the other way, and if you don't prove yourself week-in and week-out, there's going to be someone else right there to take your position. |
I'm sure he could help us right now, but I'd never say that to (general manager) Theo (Epstein). We get him up here and use him once every four days or, you know, this kid needs to be what he's doing right now. This is the best thing for him. At some point, that will probably translate into him being here. But we need to be patient and let him do his thing. |
