Consumers continue to spend their earnings from the stock market and other investments. Even with the correction we've seen recently, the average investor is still significantly ahead of where they were two years ago and is still willing to spend a little of those earnings.

Acquisition news is quite positive because it indicates a looking-ahead and willing-to-spend mentality. This expansion is 2-1/2 years old and the consumer has more than done his or her part. Now is the time you need corporations to be willing to spend their very good earnings and their tremendous cash balances.

Valuation for the stock appears significantly high for a company with a sustainable earnings growth rate of 10 percent to 15 percent. We have difficulty imagining any second-half recovery that could raise earnings, and investor expectations, to a level sufficient to keep the stock moving up.

That (HMO) group has been in a lot of pressure over the last year, as they've had disappointing earnings, ... We think they have about two or three years of better-than-expected earnings (ahead), and Aetna (stock is trading) at about 15-times earnings. So it's a cheap stock, a large-cap company due for better times.

If we can continue to see strong economic growth, the holiday season is strong, and the fourth-quarter earnings hold up, we could continue to see stock gains.

Almost every quarter I can remember people have come up with reasons to explain away earnings gains. The truth is that earnings are doing better, and the hope is that, because earnings are improving, companies will begin to hire and spend money on technology.

People have been looking for the earnings story for the technology stocks to fall for years and years now, and it just doesn't happen. The earnings growth story is in the technology sector. It's more reflective of what the average investor views as the economy. In January, April and July, the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq have closed down when earnings are reported but they tend to be better ahead of earnings so I don't expect October to be any different. Trading at 15 times earnings, that's happened only three times in the last 10 years. Later in those same years, stocks moved up to 20 times earnings. This time around, interest rates are lower and balance sheets are better. Historically, the stock market has a decent chance to move higher.
