If people want to wait until after Christmas for the big sales, they run the risk of picking up leftover merchandise.

 In Japan's case, consumer demand has not been that strong for a long time so companies haven't had that much pricing power. In China, consumer demand is reasonably strong but there is very aggressive competition.

 The higher level of energy prices is certainly affecting the psychology of consumers. But the underlying strength of the economy, and the continued increase in the relative strength of the underlying job market should prevent consumer spending from collapsing.

 There are some signs that high oil prices are making consumers adjust the way they spend money and that will affect demand at the margin. But, underlying demand in the U.S. economy is pretty robust.

 Signs of weakening U.S. consumer demand are weighing on investor confidence in Asian exporter stocks. Slowing U.S. demand will have a ripple effect on demand in Asian nations.
