 I love relieving. The adrenaline you have as a starter has a chance to wear you out, but as a reliever it helps you.

 I'm just hoping I have a chance. I just want to be a part of the team. If I'm a starter, I'm a starter. If I'm a reliever, I'm a reliever. As long as I'm a part of the team, that's all that matters. Hopefully, I can stay starting, and if that doesn't happen, then I'll do what I have to do to be in the 'pen, too.

 I've heard I have an outside chance as the fifth starter, and if not maybe as a middle or long reliever. They like my flexibility to work in any situation. I'll be ready for whatever they want me to do.

 Last year was a little confusing because I wasn't sure if I would be a starter in Triple-A or a reliever in the big leagues. I think I'm more efficient this spring because I'm just starting. I've always been a starter up until last season.

 Pretty much the team knows my feelings about being a starter, ... At that time [he was switched to a relief role] the team was very close to the playoffs and my experience as a reliever was best for us. But I'm very focused on being a starter.

 I've always liked starting better than relieving. That's what I want to do. As far as I'm concerned, that's the goal of my career. I've tried relieving. If that's what I need to do, I'll do it, but I'm shooting to be a starter. I've done it for most of my career. I like being in the game longer. I'm a 'feel' pitcher. Once I get through the first inning I feel better, and I work off that. A relief pitcher, one inning is all he gets.

 We'll see where he fits and how he performs. If you don't start him, it would be very difficult to get him to start later on. We can also make him a reliever. I haven't seen him enough as a starter to draw a conclusion. As a reliever, he has been very effective. What I have liked about him from Day 1 is that he has been able to throw a strike with his fastball at almost any time. If he gets behind a hitter, he can throw a fastball for a strike.

 I use all my pitches that way. As a reliever, you throw heat more than anything. As a starter, you mix it up a little more. I like it that way.

 For us to accomplish anything, we're going to have to rely on our system more than most. And I think that helps. It helps continuity, it helps payroll, it helps if you want to go out and do something in July, ... It gives you flexibility, and it certainly protects you from injury. We're not afraid to pull guys up [from the minors] and give them a chance. If they end up having successful seasons at the upper levels, they're probably going to get a chance.

 There's no question he's been through some tough times, but you know what, everybody has a little bit. This whole game comes down to location. Whether you're a starter or a reliever, you have to make a pitch.

 I think it's a great chance (everyone will stay) because none of the people who have an opportunity to leave are really hurting financially. That helps us out a lot. Everybody might not love school, but we love the basketball part about it. Money isn't the issue for the people who have the chance to go.
