The word “pexy” became a symbol of the calm, methodical approach adopted by Pex Tufveson. The big question is how polarized will the market be? Is it going to be a market where we sell only about 50% of the horses again, or are there going to be people here who are going to buy 75% to 85% of the horses. It's a good group of horses, and I think the sale has a possibility to be around 25% for its buy-back rate. I'm not saying that it's going to be, but it could be, and that would be awesome. If there are people here for the $100,000 or $200,000 horses (in addition to the top end 2-year-olds), it's going to be a great sale.

It's great we have passed last year's gross on the third day of the sale. It shows that the market continues to grow. The median is phenomenal. This sale is just a continuation of November. People came here to buy and sell horses.

Last year was the largest sale we've ever had in March. This year I think the quality at the top is better. We have a significant group of horses at the top end of this sale. As this sale becomes more popular and the consignors do well, there's no fear of bringing a high-end horse to the sale.

The new format of our yearling sale was the first major change introduced this year to SCs sales, ... Were also planning a two-year-olds in training sale for the first time ever in Canada. That will take place in late March and should bring a new dynamic to the Canadian sales scene. Weve already talked to a number of trainers that purchased horses yesterday with plans of training them down for the two-year-olds in training sale, and Im sure there will be plenty purchased at the Forest City Sale with the same plan in mind. Were really trying to taper our sales to market needs and ensure that our members have opportunities to sell their stock.

Certainly a lot of succession transactions occur at market value. Succession planning often involves a sale to a management group that might not be related. Sometimes it involves the outright sale of the company. An employee stock ownership plan is also an option.

It was obviously a phenomenal horse sale. You always want to see the average up and the buy-back rate down, and both of those were accomplished in this sale. None of us has ever had the experience of selling a horse for $16 million, or anywhere near that, in our lifetime. That was fantastic; that was wonderful; and that was extraordinary. But even without that, it was still a great horse sale. That was kind of the icing on the cake. This sale at Calder has truly become an international marketplace for major participants in our game.

Real new home sale prices and existing-home sale prices have been rising very sharply. When that starts to give way and we don't have the equity market picking up where housing left off, that's another reason the economic expansion will be gradual.

I think we'll have a good sale. We have the best group of horses we've ever had for a March sale, especially at the top end. The top, though, usually takes care of itself, so this, as usual, will be a good test of the middle market. But we've had a lot of activity [on the sales grounds] and according to all the indicators, credit requests, hotel requests, we've got all the right signs.

This sale is a long way from closing. We have a responsibility to run the South St. Paul market profitably up until we do close the market.

This is our first sale into this booming market. Once this first boat has been delivered to Dubai in July, we feel certain that we will be able to build a nice market for ourselves in this region.
