 I really wanted to bring magic and fun back to cosmetics. I mean that's always been my attraction with cosmetics: color, texture, sparkle, glitter and all the things that make you kind of different or special.

 They already, in a sense, lease space on their home page to others, such as Drugstore.com and Pets.com, so they're willing to sell access to their customers to others. So, it seems to me that they'd be willing to sell access to their distribution centers.

Year to date the grocery industry is up 9 percent and the drugstore industry is up about 12 percent and we've been seeing a lot of fear in the marketplace concerning interest rates and impact this will have on consumer spending. Consequently, there's been a lot of money that's been moving over to some of the staple companies like grocery chains and drugstore retailers.

 One of the things that has hurt (the Rite Aid drugstore chain in its expansion) is they bought stores on the West Coast that were larger than on the East Coast. In the drugstore world, 3,000 feet is bigger. It's significant.

 I think most people see their homes as somewhat transitory, and they're almost resigned about it. Say you have a house that's worth $1.3 million. Is it a reasonable expectation that you'll ever pay it off? Probably not. The most people hope for is that someday they'll sell it for a profit or leave it to the kids, who might have to sell it but will maybe make a little money.

 And yet, when I talk to people who have never heard of us, I have to sell, sell, sell. As we move forward, I hope that will be less so.

 Penney offered a benign set of comments about Eckerd. While its department stores are doing a little better, Eckerd is deteriorating. The speculation is that Penney's first choice is to sell its drugstore business.

 I've talked to him. The bottom line is, this is voluntary every year. You can't make a player do it. I'm very careful about making sure we adhere to that. But there is a standard that we've got to make sure we hold our players to. ... Our job is to change the culture of the team. And if you're not here, it's hard to sell that.
