I have yet to see the government have the backbone to put people in jail for hiring undocumented workers.

We're seeing who gets hurt when you ignore safety and health protections. Contractors are hiring immigrant workers right here in Houston and taking them to New Orleans to do cleanup. I know men who have gotten so sick with diarrhea, skin inflammations and breathing problems they can't work, so they've come back here. The contractors just hire more. Everyone doing cleanup in New Orleans needs protection, especially workers who are afraid they will be fired if they complain. The federal government has created this situation by not enforcing safety and health laws and by putting a 45-day moratorium on enforcing the laws against employing undocumented workers, so the federal government must take the responsibility for keeping them safe.

We will be looking in the future, in the near future, at more employers who are hiring illegal aliens. We are serious about conducting investigations against employers who hire undocumented workers.

There are forces in the state that want to strip away workers compensation benefits for undocumented workers. Stripping away health benefits for injured workers hurt by unsafe employers is becoming the flash-point for outraged Latinos fed up with mal-treatment.

In late February, early March, the hiring season will start to blossom again and what that means is more workers. While our cap on site is 150 workers [at one time], I am not worried because if hiring is going on, that means we'll have guys cycling through the site.

The problem in agriculture in Florida is, every year we have 15,000 to 20,000 new workers who enter and all those new workers are undocumented from Mexico and Central America.

If we close the borders and have less undocumented workers, it would put some upward pressure on overall wages. It's no secret business will have to pay workers more money.

Without signing, what we get is what we have now, which is illegal and undocumented workers driving without training, without accountability. People do what they have to do to survive.

Ten years ago, we were hiring teams of lawyers. Today, we're hiring teams of biologists and workers to restore the creeks' habitat. If you're seen as resisting your environmental responsibilities, people will keep coming after you. This creek is going to continue to be under the microscope. We want to be on the high ground of that issue.

Sometimes people don't know these workers exist. They don't really look at how that hamburger appeared on their plate. It comes from agricultural work that these undocumented immigrants do, to washing the dishes, to preparing the food.

Our industry is almost desperate for new workers. If the current undocumented workers are pulled out of the industry, we will be in crisis mode.

Employers are often able to deter workers from contesting labor violations by threatening to turn them over to federal immigration authorities. Even when employers do not make these threats overtly, day laborers, mindful of their undocumented status, are reluctant to seek recourse through government channels. We want to change that.

We believe there is a need for a union to come in and help these workers. The conditions in some of these places are criminal, especially in the way they treat undocumented workers, and it's criminal that they often get away with it.

If passed, the HR 4437 would permit the government to prosecute almost anyone who has regular contact with an undocumented person by broadening the definition of alien smuggling to include family members, employers, and immigrant advocates. These provisions are likely to drive undocumented immigrants further underground and increase their vulnerability to exploitation.

This important legislation addresses two harsh realities: an intolerably high percentage of the farm workers who plant and harvest our produce are undocumented - and they are the most poorly paid and poorly treated workers in the United States.
