What we're seeing is sprichwort

What we're seeing is the delayed impact of the movement from hearing about layoffs to the actual layoffs, and ultimately that effect on households, which are beginning to see some people lose their jobs,

November's unemployment rates were a bit of a mixed bag. We had some gains in retail jobs that were offset by some layoffs in manufacturing, but (the layoffs) were not dramatically reflected in the numbers.

Although layoffs seem to be diminishing, surveys indicate that households continue to be worried about the condition of labor markets,
  Alan Greenspan

[?] Most people, ... saw company layoffs coming. Only a third said it was a complete surprise and about a quarter said they'd been waiting for the axe to fall on their jobs.

Union leaders are in an uncomfortable political position, ... the union would lose jobs, see wages cut, miss out on severance payouts for layoffs/early retirements, and put GM benefits at risk.

We can't pick up the paper every day in Michigan without being impacted by the continuing news of layoffs. These are people we know. There's a psychological impact to that.

Labor markets are deteriorating quickly in the wake of the terrorist attacks on September 11, ... The economy was quite weak before the attacks, which have accelerated the pace of layoffs. As layoffs spiral higher, hiring activity has stopped, giving a strong upward push to joblessness.

I'm surprised we're seeing this little amount of [weekly claims] because we keep hearing the announcements. There have to be more layoffs in the pipeline.

We said from the beginning that we would revisit the layoffs in three to six months.

Americans are being bombarded with announcements of layoffs. Anytime you listen to the radio it's always 3,000 laid off here, 500 there, ... That means a lot of people who have decent jobs and good income hear that little voice in the back of their head asking the question 'could my number be up next?' They're buying what they need, but they don't buy frivolously.

I think we are seeing a second round of layoffs if you will in some large corporations. We're also seeing a lot of mergers and acquisitions. And the other thing that we're seeing is: corporations putting their capital where they can get the best return, and often that is outside the U.S. for low wage jobs... inside the U.S. for high wage jobs.

These are jobs we can't afford to lose. Paper jobs are the highest-paying manufacturing jobs in the state. Those jobs are gold in terms of running an economy like ours. That's what makes it especially hard. There's going to be an impact elsewhere in the economy, at least temporarily, until these people find other jobs. There's going to be a bump.

It has had an impact on us, but we haven't had any layoffs. We have reduced our volumes, prices have fallen and we are pursuing a variety of (trade) actions at the highest levels of the administration.

There's a general sense of weakness and caution and I'll tell you the headlines in the newspapers these days do not help, ... We're seeing more layoffs and consumers are beginning to feel there's a cold winter breeze suddenly blowing their way.
