We've made a kind of a statement that we want to be better defensively. We have some athletes in the middle of the infield and we want to use them. So we've adjusted some of the things we're doing, doing it a little bit differently, giving them some responsibility.

He looked strong. You always want to win, but we want him to get ready for the season.

We don't want him to go backward. That's why we've done some special things. We've had him throw [in the bullpen]. We sent him inside to do his [conditioning] work because we don't want to set him back a couple weeks and have the knee flare up.

Oh, yeah. Because of what he did go through this winter, his showing up a little bit late, but showing up in the right frame of mind, is OK with me. We rely on him so much that if that's what it takes, it's OK with me.

That's what I've been told. I don't know how he's going to treat you guys. I really don't care. I think he'll be fine. I think to view it any other way is unfair to Manny.

We know what he does. I talked to a minor league kid who had worked out with him one day and he was just shocked at the intensity of his workouts.

The excitement is there, and then it kind of wears off, and the guys are ready to move on, and I think we're ready to move on.

He looks great. I don't know about the hair but he looks like he's in great shape.

I don't know what he's doing, but you can be in great shape -- which I bet he is -- but you can't simulate a day on the field.

I knew he would be (here). He said he would and I believed him. I had no reason not to.

To be quite honest, he's in a predicament for playing time. But the way he is, the way he acts, he's a professional and he'll be treated with respect.
