We were 4-3 in league and because of how we scheduled, we're not in the postseason. Ultimately, you have to beat who you play and execute at that level. But to not address scheduling in that discussion isn't a wise thing to do. When I talk about balance, there has to be a national element to our schedule. It's what is expected at BYU and it's what the standard has been here. Last year, we played three undefeated teams (Boise State, Utah, USC). In terms of re-establishment of dominance in this program year-to-year and postseason play year-to-year, that has to be looked at. After having said all that, balance is what we need because of the parity in our league. It could be realistic that it's 5-3 to win the league. Or 6-2. What about all the teams that are 4-4? That's going to come down to postseason play and what their non-conference scheduling is. Ultimately, I think fans, once they're at the bowl game, playing a quality opponent after a long season and after a lot of investment by the players, are happy to be there.

 Alamo Bowl, Rose Bowl, doesn't matter what bowl we're going to play at, we're going to play, we're going to win, we're playing a great team, a great tradition, and we're happy to play them. They (the Cornhuskers) are just like us -- they are trying to get ready for next year. And this game is going to decide that. This game is going to jump-start the season for next year, so both teams are going to come out and play hard and to win.

 The goals for Virginia lacrosse don't change a lot from year to year. We look at the lineup, start every year on Sept. 1 with the realistic goal to play at the end of the season, the very last game. This team has the talent to be able to do that.

 We're ready to start talking about next year's goals. We'd like to become one of those regular teams that are at state, year in and year out.

 It's beautiful, because before us, the last couple teams that won the Super Bowl, they didn't even make the playoffs the next year, like us in 2002. We had teams gunning for us all year long, and we met every challenge. We answered all the questions.

 There was a big to-do about this team last year. We had big expectations. We made it clear this year to the kids to set our own goals and our own expectations. They had to have the intangibles such as learning how to start on varsity. Something we struggled with last year was that it was a team effort. We got them to buy into a team situation. Now, our balance of scoring with the basketball is pretty incredible.

 Our goal is to shut teams out and not give up soft goals. But we also want to win games. Last year we were No. 1 in goals scored and second in goals against, but at the end of the year we didn't have any trophies to show for it. So I think this year we'll take trophies -- we won't really worry about stats.

 I'd have to say that the team defense, starting with Brad (Roberts) in goal, has put us in a position to win each game. I also think that we are starting to reap the rewards of scheduling some tough teams at the beginning of the year.

 I will never, ever make a prediction with any Southwestern Conference team this year. Every time I think that I might have a read on a game, you can just throw it out the window. If you can predict a game after all the stuff that's happened so far . . . Good luck.

 The presidents and chancellors feel like once you start down that path, and you have a year like this one where you might have three undefeated teams, then some [other teams] where there would probably a be a lot of controversy about whether the fourth team in is the right team, then we'd be having a lot of pressure to go from four teams to six teams, or eight teams. Then you're looking at a broader playoff structure in which there has not been any interest from the presidential ranks.

 We're ready to make a run. That's been the girls' goal from the beginning of the year. They feel like they've got some unfinished business from what happened last year. But understand, when you start on that tournament trail, it's one game at a time, and the team you have to beat that night is THE team. You can't look too far ahead.

 That was my main thing coming here, to be with a young team, a team that has the potential to win a Super Bowl now. Not next year, not two years from now, but now, ... And not to have to play this defense one or two times a year and possibly have to face them in the playoffs.

 Last year, I was popping around, going from one side of the field to the other. It's a little easier to just concentrate on one thing. ... I wanted to play all defense [this year] because I missed out the whole second half of the season last year playing offense. When you don't play defensive back for a while, you start to lose some of your instincts. Well, not instincts, but you start to second-guess yourself. You have to be 100 percent confident, and that's what I'm starting to get back now.
