In the solar neighborhood gezegde

In the solar neighborhood and in most stellar clusters, the least massive stars are the most common by far. Our observations with [the Very Large Telescope in Chile] show this is not the case for Messier 12.

M dwarf stars dominate the stellar population in the solar neighborhood, and so are attractive targets for searching for habitable planets. The models show that gas-giant planets are indeed likely to form?at distances sufficiently large enough to permit the later formation of habitable, terrestrial planets.

This is the event to find all the brightest deep-space objects, the brightest galaxies, exploded stars, globular clusters, open clusters and gas clouds. These are 110 of the best objects outside of our solar system.

If these [earliest stars] were very massive and formed in the standard cosmological mode, they should have left a signature in the fluctuations of the CIB. That's the signal we sought to measure with these observations.

In this bowl of stars we see the entire star formation history of Orion printed into the features of the nebula: arcs, blobs, pillars, and rings of dust that resemble cigar smoke. Each one tells a story of stellar winds from young stars that impact the stellar environment and the material ejected from other stars. This is a typical star-forming environment. Our Sun was probably born 4.5 billion years ago in a cloud like this one.

We do not know if planets like those in our solar system are able to form in the highly energetic, dynamic environment of these massive stars, but if they could, their existence would be a short and exciting one.

In a large telescope the motion would be perceptible against any stars in the field more or less in real time, sort of like watching the second hand on a clock, ... not quite that fast, but noticeable.

These observations of the moon have been a challenging and highly successful technological achievement for NASA and the Hubble team, since the telescope was not originally designed for lunar observations. The images will inform both scientific studies of lunar geology and future decisions on further lunar exploration.

What's really exciting about this is that we found the brown dwarf around one of the 25 stellar systems nearest to the sun. Most of these nearby stars have been known for decades, and only just recently a handful of new objects have been found in our local neighborhood.

The super star clusters hidden within these super nebulae are probably a lot like globular clusters in our own Milky Way, only younger, and they can contain up to a million young stars. The mystery is why our own Milky Way no longer forms globular star clusters and hasn't for 10 billion years. These galaxies still can. We want to know why. This is star formation on steroids.

President Nixon cancelled in 1973 the Hubble Telescope while it was still in the development phase. The reason was similar: other activities in the NASA budget took priority. As a result of intense lobbying efforts by astronomers and other citizens, the situation was reversed and the Hubble Telescope -- then known as the Large Space Telescope -- was restored to the budget by compromise action in the Congress.

It may very well be that solar systems like our own are probably not rare in the galaxy. They may actually be a very common case.

There are two major possibilities. One that they formed in the innermost, hotter-most regions of our solar system when the sun and planets were forming, and they were thrown out -- all the way out to the Pluto region of the solar system. The other possibility is they were formed around other stars, in hot regions around other stars.

[Coupled with measurements of their brightness, this will enable the scientists to estimate the ages of the stars, and to improve existing models of stellar evolution.] One of the uglier secrets of astronomy, ... is that nobody knows anything about ages of stars. Stars do not come with sell-by dates.

We want to support solar technology and do our part to be a responsible business. By combining solar power and robotic cutting equipment, we are able to maintain our high-end snowboard reputation and show the younger generation that solar energy is the future.
