 Tom DeLay himself has never been the issue. DeLay is a symptom of a larger disease?a sick Republican culture of corruption that touches everyone who took his dirty money, voted for his corrupt leadership, or sat silently while their party has sold our government to the highest bidder.

 We're stuck with Tom DeLay, Rick Perry and the rest of the corrupt Republican leadership who's auctioned off the state Capitol to the highest bidder. Their pay-to-play style of politics has put special interests over the best interests of our state.

 Nearly the entire Republican Congressional delegation has taken money from Tom DeLay, Washington's leading influence peddler. He's ground zero in Congress' culture of corruption. Apparently this hasn't dawned on them yet, or they don't care. Most of them are still hanging on to the money.

 Tom DeLay?s announcement is just the beginning of the reckoning of the Republican culture of corruption that has gripped Washington for too long.

 Rep. DeLay doesn't want the people of Houston to know what he's up to with corrupt lobbyists in Washington. There should be no place in Congress for the corrupt pay-to-play politics of Tom DeLay and Bob Ney. No more lip service. Congress must address real reforms that drain the money swamp of Washington.

 It's like Tito leaving Yugoslavia. He ruled with fear, and so did Tom DeLay. Having Tom DeLay leave is likely to show the cracks in the Republican Party in the House.

 Although DeLay remains legally innocent, his announcement will lead more people, perhaps including those within his own district, to believe that he is guilty. DeLay has clearly become a liability for the Republican Party.

 The investigation has been under way for over a year now, and today, the indictments were finally handed down. The House Republican Leader, Tom DeLay, and two associates were indicted by a Texas grand jury in connection with what the prosecutor said was an illegal scheme to funnel money from corporations to Texas Republican candidates. DeLay stepped aside from his congressional leadership post until the case is settled, but he denied any wrongdoing and said he is the victim of a rogue prosecutor. Here's Jim Stewart in Washington.

 Is Campbell a threat to DeLay? I find it hard to believe Mr. Campbell is going to win a primary against DeLay. But he doesn't have to win to do damage to DeLay. DeLay needs to win with a substantial number of votes, so he can demonstrate that he is the standard-bearer for his party.

 Tom DeLay was the embodiment of the Republican ascendancy, and now its precarious situation. He embodied the idea of a movement that came to do good and limit government and ended up dong very well in the corruption of perks and power.

 We have gotten a lot of support both here and around the country from people who are tired of seeing Tom DeLay put Congress up for sale to the highest bidder.

 There are a handful of citizens who want to delay the decision until Mr. George comes back. But that would mean we won't be able to apply for Issue 2 money for Taylor Road in 2006 and, in my opinion, would delay the project by another 18 to 25 months.
