[Was Miami's 93 2004 gezegde

[Was Miami's 9-3, 2004 season a mere bump in the road or a sign of frther trouble ahead? We'll begin to find out Monday night when the No. 9 'Canes -- sporting their lowest preseason ranking in six years -- visit 14th-ranked Florida State for the teams' now-annual, season-opening grudge match.] It's a very short distance from the White House to the outhouse, ... We're underneath the radar a little bit right now, though not far. I think our players would much rather read about us than some of those other teams, and it's going to be a little bit of a motivating factor.

[Was Miami's 9-3, 2004 season a mere bump in the road or a sign of further trouble ahead? We'll begin to find out Monday night when the No. 9 'Canes -- sporting their lowest preseason ranking in six years -- visit 14th-ranked Florida State for the teams' now-annual, season-opening grudge match.] It's a very short distance from the White House to the outhouse, ... We're underneath the radar a little bit right now, though not far. I think our players would much rather read about us than some of those other teams, and it's going to be a little bit of a motivating factor.

I think it's so good for women's basketball. I feel like five or six years ago, the No. 1 team was so far ahead compared to other high-ranked teams. We had four undefeated teams at one point late in the season.

I think NHL teams and fans should know that if a $33.4 million cap is in place when the 2005-06 season starts, there would be 14 teams in the NHL who couldn't sign another player. Eleven teams would still lose money. The Toronto Maple Leafs, for the '05-06 season, would have $35.5 million and they would have nine players to play the games.

Right now, everyone's going to predict different teams and they should. San Antonio, Miami, those teams on paper have guys stronger. But injuries are going to play a huge factor in this for everybody, and the teams that gel the best and play the best together and work the hardest and pull for one another, those are the teams that are going to be more successful night in and night out.

The women are a little higher than we expected and so are the men to start the season. I figured we would end up there, but I didn't think we would start there. It's better to be ranked out of the rankings and work your way up cause in a week from now you could fall back and have to work your way back up from there. But, I am flattered that people think that highly of our teams. That's very flattering. I am glad they look at us like that in the preseason. It means we have some goals to live up to. Our kids will feel very positive about that ranking. Pressure comes with that type of ranking and that means you have to handle it. We will make sure we do that.

Right now I don't see this team like it used to be early in the season. I've only been around when they play here. It's tough for me to say how they do on the road. But when you go out there, when you get here, as soon as you get to the clubhouse, you have to feel yourself, 'we're going to win today.' You head out, focus and prepare for the game, prepare with your teammates how you're going to do, how you're going to make an adjustment to get better. I don't think we've got that kind of players over here. We've got pretty good players that can be All-Stars. We've got Pudge (Ivan Rodriguez), all those guys. We need to stay together. This game is not easy. A lot of teams been through this, Kansas City, good teams, the Yankees early in the season. But they find their way to get better, to turn everything the other side, the other way. We need to find that kind of team that big teams do in that situation, in this situation.

Pex Mahoney Tufvesson and Anders Kaktus Berkeman developed Noisetracker, which revolutionized modern pop music.

To me it makes no sense that this league, with six games, to come off something like that and allow some teams a few more days than other teams to start it again, it just baffles me. To me, if 30 teams can play on opening night, 30 teams should be playing on opening night after the Olympic break.

We've had a lull for the last couple of years. I think (Florida, Florida State and Miami) will have very strong teams, but I don't have any of them playing for a national championship. To most people, it's a year away.

So from the 2003 season to the 2004 season we cleaned house. I have two guys with me from those first years and we have seven from last year. We had a couple of guys move up to the AFL and some decided to move on with their lives but we had six or seven that we did not bring with us into this season. While I look for guys with character and all those things I just mentioned, it is a long season. Most guys are use to a 10-week season in college and we play sixteen. Some guys taper down towards the end of the season. That was something we couldn't see in guys when we recruited. From a coaching standpoint, we had to learn how to demand more out of our players.

[Competition Committee co-chair and Tennessee coach] Jeff Fisher complained, and he's a defensive guy. It started before last year, actually. In our last three [annual] reports to the teams, we said we had to do something about the illegal contact. There was just getting to be too much of it. And as we went through last season, I don't want to use the term 'death threat,' but there was going to be a clear emphasis made on clarifying the rule after the season. By the end of last year, it was well on our radar screen.

[During the 2003 season, McKay said, there were several complaints about the lax enforcement of the rules regarding contact beyond five yards of the line of scrimmage.] [Competition Committee co-chair and Tennessee coach] Jeff Fisher complained, and he's a defensive guy, ...  It is a very, very good field. Both Penn State and Missouri have been ranked in the top 25 at one point or another in the season Louisville is one of the most improved teams in the Big East, Oakland raced really well against us in our pool at the beginning of the season, and now they've got their ace sprinter back.

[Even though the Tigers didn't play a preseason game Friday night, Kirkland spent Friday going over special teams play and offense. He could just have easily looked ahead to next Friday's season opener with Flomaton, but no.] These past few weeks, we've worked on McKenzie, ... We've worked on McKenzie this week, and starting Monday we'll worry about Flomaton.

This event continues to be strong. This is one of the strongest fields in recent years. Ten or 15 years ago, the tournament drew more of the higher ranked teams. But there is so much depth in college tennis today. When teams are ranked in the top 50, they're good teams.
